well, we all know that Radioheads songs are really hard to work out because of thoms ingenious metaphors and all, but if you feel like it, type up your radiohead interpretations here.
We'll see who agrees/disagrees and then determine what you have actually worked out.

If Thom`s metaphors are ingenious wouldnt they be easy to work out?
In science when one is trying to convey a science concept to someone they use language which most precisely and clearly describes the content and subsequently allows the reciever to think about the concept in greater depth rather than confuse him before he can even grasp the concept. Shouldn`t it be the same with lyrics? They are trying to convey a thought (read: social, philosophical, political etc) concept. So wouldn`t the writer obviously wishing for people to understand him want to write his lyrics in a way that it was easy for people to understand the concepts content? and then create an environment that encourages the reader/listener to think about it?
I don`t understand this whole school of thought where the more coded and difficult a message/song/poem is to understand the better it is. Isn`t it just being detrimental to the spreading of the concept?
Don`t get me wrong tools of language, such as metaphors, are necessary but rather then being used to code an idea shouldn`t they be used to examine/exaggerate/convey a connection of ideas within the concept that the reader/listener may not normally notice themselves? (To me this is where the genius of a writer comes in. A good writer will show connections that are new and bold and noone has expressed them before.)
Anyway, I realise that poetry/songwriting/storytelling is art and therefore needs to be afforded some artistic license. But, a good writer should be able to implement the artistic side without taking away from the understandability (for want of a better word) of the concept being conveyed.
That`s my 20yen (+some)!
p.s. How about these radiohead guys are they good? What sort of music? |
