Well as I said I'm not the original poster, but that's similar to what I got out of it. It's like what Karl Marx said - Religion is the opiate of the masses. Only in this case it's alcohol.

Think Brave New World and soma.

by that philosophy one wold think there would not be a separation of church and state (in the us). if we are going on the government trying to keep us under the influence (alcohol/religion) dont you think they would integrate the religion into the government more than it is so that they could control us even more?

Ok the Karl Marx quote - that was just a metaphor. Not meant to be taken literally.

But O.K., let's say the government is indeed trying to keep us under wraps somehow. If that were the case, with religion being such a hotly debated issue, it wouldn't be the smartest move on the part of the government to try and get us all to follow it more, shall we say, religiously.

Religion carries with it the dealings of salvation and damnation, whereas alcohol carries with it the promise of drunkeness and addiction. Additionally, religion deals with the unknown and the unexplained, whereas alcohol is much easier to understand. When you look at it like this, it makes much more sense that the government would try to keep us under wraps through alcohol than through religion. Alcohol isn't as judgemental, alcohol doesn't make you follow a set of rules, and it almost always carries with it the promise of good times (or the leaving/numbing of bad ones).

Worst case scenarios:

- Religion: Wars, Eternal Suffering (although you have to die first, making it an abstract idea)
- Alcohol: Organ damage, death from oversaturation (albeit a fairly calm death)

Best case scenarios:

- Religion: Eternal salvation (once again, abstract due to the death condition)
- Alcohol: Temporary happiness (in an easy to understand form too!)

So you see, alcohol is much more easily understood and much more neutral than religion, making it a better choice for social control than religion.

if they wanted to control the population with alcohol they would allow the drinking age to be the same as the voting age. and why are their laws in some states that dont allow alcohol after certain hours and on certain days. wouldnt the govt want us to be drinking all the time? please dont say they dont do that b/c that would be too obvious to all of us.
the age group that drinks the most is also the age group that votes the least. one however is not the cause of the other. they both just stem from being young and irresponsible. the people that would enact social change and go out and vote dont not do this b/c they are drunk. i have never heard someone say i would have voted but i got drunk instead.

when they decided on separation of church and state it was not at a time when religion in govt was hotly debated. religion and govt went hand in hand at the time it was decided. so wy did they go against the grain and make it more difficult? it would have been easy back then to just say yeah...lets keep the govt/religion thing all together b/c these people dont know any different.

O.K., apparently you seem to have missed that I do not really believe what I posted, as I don't actually think the government is trying to keep us under wraps.

Oh please, spare me. Just do a few bottles of the legal stuff (alcohol) and you'll be OK. Smoke ain't legal.
