Is trance "white music"??

I just read an interesting article in Muzik on status of electronica in Johannesburg. Evidently the crowd there is divided in two: The white people are listening to trance-like european music whereas the black people listen to slowed down house. Seeing that trance gets faster and faster every year this seem like the exact opposite direction for music to be taking and as such the wtwo directions are diverging. Come to think of it, when I've attended trance parties abroadit seems the majority of people are white?!?
So I was wondering whether those of you that live in an ethnically varied society (as opposed to Denmark) have similar racial/cultural divides in musical taste?

I don't agree with that article.........we have a lot of peeps from China for example that visits this forum, in our Holland Forum there are a lot of non-white peeps, maybe more then the white guys (and girls)

yeah its really noticeable in australia cos there are so many different cultures here... the main trend is that the asians, italians, greeks and a few other mediterranians (and wiggahz) listen to rap/r&b and the whites are house and up. there is a little bit of crossover in house, but mainly at the meat market clubs.

Notice how American pop music only appeals to girls. On TRL, the room is filled with girls, and maybe some boys here and there, who were probably brought by their girlfriends. Now take a look at punk rock. It only appeals to boys, althought there are some punk girls too. Then rap, its all African American boys & girls, however there is a lot of attention comming from white boys, but alas, no white girls. But there are those white boys that dont listen to "real" rap. The essence of rap long ago was rhyming, and it was fun to watch the rappers make all these insane rhymes while keeping it real and consistent, and telling a story. But now its just a music genre. Anyway, the majority of white boys like there "not real" rapping Eminem (AKA complaining and talking, not rapping). But notice how every type of music has different types of fans. Its just life.

I'm not white and I love the music more than anyone. In fact my dad is from South Africa. I'd have to say the reason black people listen to different music there is just a reflection of the racial tension already present and the influence of the Zulu culture. Ever listen to Ladysmith Black Mumbaza? Not exactly the fastest music.

As far as here in the States the main reason mostly whites listen to trance/house/DNB is because the music scene here is mainly underground therefore party kids/ravers are the ones listening to this type of music. The Hispanics and especially the East Asians are really into florida breakbeats. Black people are into urban beats such as R&B/Rap which were already big a long time ago. Hispanics like breakbeats because they've been part of Latin Hip-Hop since back in the day. Don't ask my why Asians like breakbeats so much, that baffles me.

I think in the uk there is this new UK GARAGE thing, ahhhhhhhhhh i hate garage, and there is a black white divide, most white people like dance music, and most black people go for garage music, expcept for the kevs, who go for garage, coz it is the new thing in england, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh i hate it, but that in general, so it is not exactly like that, just so i dont get flamed

i dont really agree with the article either, i live in canada, which is very ethnically diverse. if you go to a party here, you'll see all different races of people. if you walk from the trance room to the house room to the drum n bass room, you wont notice any different concentration of any certain race of person than in the previous room. maybe im wrong, but i havent paid much attention to this type of thing. music is for the mind, anyone that has one can appreciate it:p

i have to agree with insom. canada is so diverse its not even funny. i seen ppl of pretty much all races and colors jam to trance, maybe in some countries where trance is not considered as underground as it is here, there is a separation, but not up in canada, not that i know if anyways, trance is spoken of as it is something almost illegal, a bad thing to do, and if you listen to it, you'll go to hell :eyes:

Well, I live in Florida, and, when I attended ultra, I was able to see what kinda crowd likes the electronic music, the same goes to those that go to trance related clubs. White people is what you will see more in the scene, and Asians, well, they are white also, and I saw alot of them. Hispanics are very into it too, breaks is more tours central FL so I dont quite know, but yes is very white. I saw some blacks though dancing in the crowd, but just very few, and they've could've been from europe since there is most likely to see a black person grooving to that music... well , this is how I see it

Rap/R&B = Blacks, some Ghetto whites, and guetto Puerto Ricans, cubans.

Rock ( all related to it ) = Now that is white hehehehe

Pop = I see it as a candy pop girly white music, but this is famous on any country, so is not just white.

House music = In south Africa this is like one of the favorite grooves, so I there Is more black oriented, but here in the states, you'll see anyone dancing to it.

and Trance = Well, I've been told that its whites music.. maybe here, but really, I see more hispanics, atleast in my school listening to this music , and Ive also been told that its rich kidds music, I wonder why they say that.

in panama theres like no R&B and no rap and stuff's like that, so raves have EVERYBODY in them, black, white, asian, dosnt matter at all, and i dont think it should , i think this topic is ridiculous but thats just my opinion..... trance was made for everybody.

oh shiet, u live in Irvine? I live like one city over in LH.. anyways, in South OC there is a large asian population (esp Westminster, Garden Grove, etc...) many of those people listen to trance music.

However, it just depends on the people. Like I never listen to the radio. All the CDs I burn contain songs I download or are referred to by friends. There are black people that hate rap, there are white people that hate rock. But most trance is made in Europe, so my guess is that Trance music IS 'white music' :D
