Clubbers enjoying a new era of safety
Nightclubs come to the party in bid to wipe out anti-social behaviour

ASSAULTS and late night anti-social behaviour have been reduced due to an innovative scheme which ensures the safety of thousands of clubbers who flock to north coast nightclubs at weekends.
And now the scheme, which has been gradually introduced throughout Northern Ireland, could be used as a model of good practice as new legislation is introduced throughout the United Kingdom.
The Safer Dancing guidelines were launched in 2001 in Portrush in an attempt to provide a safe dance environment in the popular nightclubs in the area.
The scheme was the brainchild of Coleraine Council, which worked in conjunction with the police, local licensees and the Northern Drugs Co-ordination Team.
The Coleraine borough was the first area in the province to introduce Safer Dance initiatives such as free water, a quiet room and the registered door supervisors' scheme.
The scheme also saw the introduction of trained medical staff at nightclubs, venue logbooks and the provision of air conditioning and free drinking water at all venues.
Since its introduction other council areas have adopted a number of the strategies although Coleraine remains one of the only areas to have fully implemented the guidelines on safer dancing as set out by the Government.
Police inspector John Kinkead, who was instrumental in setting up the pilot scheme, believes the Safer Dancing Initiative has dramatically reduced high levels of anti-social nighttime behaviour which plagued Portrush.
"The Safer Dancing Strategy has provided young people on the north coast with one of the safest environments in which to socialise," said Mr Kinkead.
"Since its introduction we have seen a reduction in assaults and in complaints against door staff.
"We were quick to grasp that the days of brute force and fighting outside clubs and bars was not working and all our door supervisors are fully vetted and properly trained in how to diffuse difficult situations.
"We taught out door supervisors, many of whom are women, how to resolve situations peacefully in an attempt to stamp out violence.
"The Safer Dancing committee has been asked to visit other council areas in Northern Ireland and we have advised other venues how to set up similar schemes.
"The Coleraine scheme remains one of the only fully functional Safer Dancing strategies and as legislation is slowly introduced throughout the United Kingdom it will be used as a model for other areas," said inspector Kinkead.
The Safer Dancing committee is raising awareness of important measures put in place in the pubs and clubs in the Coleraine area through the website www.saferdancing.co.uk. |

What a wonderful Idea, Graham. It could've been possible if Chretien were around, but now that Paul Martin is groveling at Bush's feet, I think it's beautiful hope.
I'd be all for it. |
