Conflict with my GF
View this Thread in Original format

Hey!

Well i had a little conflict with my girlfriend about a track im doing.
She said it sounds wrong after the break and i said it's not.
Well she knows music theory & I do aswell but I really cant hear whats wrong.
She said my ears might have been used to the sound and cant tell whats right or wrong anymore (I guess its possible!?)
So im posting the track in 192kbps, i want you to tell me if you think its wrong or not (especially the pad after the break).
I need to know to finish the tune with additionnals effects and sub melodies.
Thx for help
Hope u understood what I meant

u can also add comments

well it's not actually wrong. It sounds a little odd tho.

I'd change the pad progression as the last note seems to lead nowhere. It creates tension but does not proberly resolve it. Maybe make it an 8bar-loop and alter the ending to the leading tone to your first chord.

nice sound anyways:toocool:

thx for your reply.
Ill try changing the last note on an eight bar loop then but I liked it that way :(
damnit I hate being wrong :toothless
Mossy
theres a cymbal crash that is strangely cut short at 2:46(ish) but on the whole it sounds really good. I know what you mean about the tension not resolving but it doesn't sound THAT bad, but yeah, it could sound 'better', not that it doesnt sound really pro already!
Subtle
hmm.. interesting sound u got there, but I cant really tell what is wrong with the pad, other than I dont think it is a good choice of chords on the pad in general, but I think it was the bass that was most wrong..
marco.V
bass?
this is really strange cuz i think i didnt make any mistakes in the notes for the bassline.
I think im gonna review everything and check some music theory site to re-do the bass/pads
to Mossy: dont worry about the crash cuz i didnt work the transitions & fxs. I wanted to be sure of what was wrong.

glad u all replied and enjoyed the track already
Subtle
I am not saying it was in music theory wrong, cause there I have little knowledeg.. I just think the bass sounded strange, didnt fit or something.. but anyhow it is a great idea you got there

well i guess you might be right. The bass sound is indeed strange if you compare it to the one there is at the beginning
again i gotta check
thx for pointing this out

That's a pretty badass tune man, i'm impressed at some of the stuff on these forums. Can't wait till i can make stuff like that... do you think it gets to a point where as soon as you have an idea in your head, you can quickly put it into the sequencer and bam, you have a song?

Im glad you liked it! I will let you know when the track is finish cuz theres still a lot of things to do on it.
To answer your question id say yes, it took me around 2 years to change what was on my mind into a song. Now i can do it but still i got a lot of problem with synth programming (which I learned a lot on these forums) and this is a real handicap

kewlness
Haven't you learned??? girlfriend is ALWAYS right!! hehe ;)

but anyways, I actually think that it not only sounds wrong but it is wrong musically and I agree with what your g/f said...

Here's my "synposis" (based on my ears):

Melody: F A G F G E G A F

(That's the first part... the other parts vary but they are similar in terms of notes)

Bass: D, C, D, F, D, C, A, E, F, G, D, E, D, E, G, A... (keeps going)

Pads: D/F/G/A (it sounds really garbled and these are all the notes I hear... and it sounds like they are playing the same time)

First of all... for trance, it isn't a good idea to have your bass vary around so much... In your case, I would make your bass like D,C,D,F,D,C,D,F,...

The Actual chords for your track then would be:
Dmin, C, Dmin, Dmin which is a decent chordal progression in terms of trance

Second of all.. the melody... It is definately ok to have non-chord notes in the melody. Actually, it is necessary to have non-chord notes in the melody or else your melody will sound like arpeggios. Now, the main problem however is how you lay your notes. A very important thing to watch out is that the notes in your melody that are in the chord are EMPHASIZED. Whether it be on the first beat, holding a longer duration, I can't tell you... But the chord notes have to stand out MORE than the non-chord notes... Of course as with music, there are always exceptions... but it is better to just stick with these rules as I don't want to get into my talk with suspended notes and etc... hehe

Third of all.. the pads.. they really sound garbled and just sounds like a whole slew of notes... clean them up..

Don't want to be bashing your track or anything.. but just trying to give you some insight and criticism to help you... hope that helps! :toocool:

hey, its ok m8, thats what i asked!!!
your post was indeed really helpful
-i do agree the bass vary too much and keeping it like in the first 4 bar is an excellent idea imo
-the pads are definately the things i should work on, i do believe it scares the other instruments away :) and also i gotta find the good vibe in those
-about the non chords notes: I might try to emphasize the "in chords" notes but im not sure it will works really better (gotta try though).
well thx a lot

other comments & suggestions about chords, what's right or wrong are welcome
;)

oh and your ears are great
