| ok so i need to make a decision and it is a relatively big one. this is my situation: i will be starting a new job within my company in july (though i will start training on the new job next week) and i have to choose between two departments. i interviewed with both already and got an idea of what i would be doing in each. i have weighed out the pros and cons of each and i think i know which one i want to go with. my issue is, that i had kinda already made this decision going into the second interview. i am worried that i am making this decision too quickly and that i am somehow biasing myself. i mean, in this situation, i am choosing between two fairly different jobs that i will be working at full time for the foreseeable future... so i want to be sure i am making the right decision and i dont know how to be sure... |

ok...
job 1
i will be a process engineer in a group that makes pills. eceot that they pills have a special time release technology. my company has been doing this quite a while but i think this is the only plant in the world that makes it at the moment. this department would be relatively large, with about ten people. they have loads of work to do and a lot of visibility to corporate right now because they need to increase efficiency so that they can have more capacity. i kinda worry that i might get lost working in a big group and that i might not get an opportunity to shine as much. i found the people in the group nice but i couldnt get a real feel for them on my interview. i connected really well with my would-be manager but i hear that he is a lot stronger technically than as a manager. i know the department director from a previous job and he is really great to work for. I feel like this job i might get more networking but it is a safer route...
job 2
i will be a process engineer on a new proudct that will be launching next year. the product has recently gotten a lot of really postive media and also has a lot of visibility from corporate since it has the potential to be a top grossing product (job one already has one of the company's top products). the technology is really neat. it is like a patch that has a microchip in it so that when you push a button it dispenses drug for 10 minutes and then stops. so you can push the button when you need the pain relief. i think the product itself is fascinating. the production line is very mechinical and needs a lot of additional sensors put on (which i dont particularly like working on). my expertise is chemcial stuff. the group has 2 engineers and a manager and a director. i met the engineers and i really liked them. they seemed very capable and like they would be nice to work with. i think in this job i might have a big opportunity to shine because there are so few engineers and the product is such high visibility. my current boss also told me he would take this one over the other one, though that was partially cause of his personal interests....
i think both jobs will be very good but i am kinda leaning towards one over the other and i dont know how to know if it is the right decision for me.... (can you guess which job i am leaning towards?) |

So what happens if the product fails and no one buys it?
Go with the proven time release technology (paxil? :) ) |

being an engineer, i am often skeptical of marketing, but in this case, i think their forecasts are somewhat right. regardless, i am sure that both products will have capacity issues meeting the market demand. so from that perspective, i think both jobs are pretty solid. |

| hmm.... i am leaning towards the first one though... maybe cause it requires more chemical engineering, i am not sure though... |

what you have to do is weigh the money to effort ratio...
Money ($)
--------- = Happiness
Effort (t)
now you want to maximize your money while minimizing your effort in an attempt to maximize happiness ;)
so whichever one is greater do that... |
