You can tell the pitch changes on his mixes, though. Its not impossible to make a mix with belt drives. Just more hassle than anything else. Worrying if your belts with fly the pitch off shouldnt be something you have to concern yourself over! |

Belt Drive decks will limit your ability and when you go to get newer decks, you wont get much worth, back from your old belt drives. So like i said, if you want to waste money go for it because thats what you'll end up doing, buying belt drives. |
Yeah but the cheapo direct drives are just as bad as the belt drives.
Ohh and to Tech or nothing man... I seriously can't be arsed even starting on that. You better be joking.
Edit: Do realise tho I did and still do say get directs. Just that if he can't get belts. And what I mean by not fixating on technology is that 'some' people seem to think that Technics or whatever are a requirement to being able to either learn how to dj or dj. They are not. Next your going to be telling which carts he needs and the signal to noise ration of the cables and all that crap. A decent set of direct drives or even a set of decent belts you CAN learn on. And just again for thouse who don't seem to realise I say this DO try to get direct but if you can and only then if you can't, get belts. |

I do agree with Dervish here. Yes, Technics are the industry standard etc etc, but unless you have got the money, I'd recommend in getting some second hand ones, its not essential for a learner. Roughly, it takes about 3/4 months of repetetive (spelling?) practice to get some basic beat matching going and to create a small blended mix. Maybe even less then that.
As long as he gets the basics, he can get rid of the older decks, grab a new set, keep his mixer, once he's used that to buggery, he can then move on to bigger and better mixers (or what ever process he finds suitable for himself!)
I think everyones throwing down the gauntlet of "How To DJ in a Week" method here, yes the guy was a tad cocky, but he doesn't understand the art of DJ'ing like we do. The guy is merely a "Padawan", who knows, he maybe the next "Jedi" of the future ;) |

Well, again, this is up to you. A DJ has to do research, and his own research only, that, at the end of a long 3/4 hour set, will pay off.
You have to broaded your boundaries when it comes to the tunes your going to play. Don't just play the new tunes every DJ is caning and calling it there tune of the week, or don't just pick up the last 100 tunes you bought off of eBay/Only-DJ/HTFR/Chemical etc etc, play the tunes YOU want to play.
I can't recommend anything else but look around. Find that tune you'll think people will go nuts to!

yeh i do agree technics are the industry standard but they are not the be all and end all of djing if you havent got them.
I still love my citronic pd1 direct drives and have never given me a problem... apart from the dodgy pitch lock at 0. At 130 quid these are a steal.
I would love some technics if i could afford them, but id rather spend my money on something i seriously need rather than an upgrade i dont really want or care about. |
