Camel Spiders
Ever heard of the dread camel spider? Apparently they're scaring the bejeezus out of some of our troops over in the sandbox. Although they're quite harmless, they're sure scary-looking.
Funny thing is, most of the accounts I've read say they're about as big as a human hand, but that's bigger than it sounds if you consider that that doesn't really count the legs. My buddy Ed Wagner sent me a camel spider photo and I gotta say, I'm not normally a fraidy cat but even knowing they're harmless, I'd probably jump about 8 feet if I encountered one of those unexpectedly.
Then again, I might also keep one for a pet. I'm odd that way.
Note that if you look at that picture carefully, it's about life-sized. You can see the sleeve cuff and part of the hand of the soldier (marine?) holding them up to the camera.
By the way, I did a bit of digging and it looks like this particular beastie is what's known as a solifugid, which is a form of arachnid but not technically a spider.

| used to play with them as kids.. the game was two people (no shoes allowed)and each person armed with a piece of A4. If the spider came at you you scooped it up and flicked it at you oppenent.. kids will be kids ;) |

who in gods name would invent a spider that big?!
did god intend for us to saddle them up and ride em into work or something?
either way im scared of spiders...dont know y but i just am and if i saw one of them in my room, reguardless of what it was doing or how harmless it is, i would shoot it dead with my bb gun.
if the spider really is so harmless then y on earth is it that size? |
