hi,
i have been messing around with tweaking on claps, I came, by accident, to the clapsound of paul van dyk:

here is the example:
click on me

and thats the original sound of paul van dyks claps, he uses in his remixes, I cut that out
click me for the sound of paul van dyks clap

now I will tell you, how to achieve this sound. (I use fruity, so sometimes you have to rethink something or so, if you dont understand what I mean)
at first this is the clap sample we start with.
then put 2 compressors on it, with attack 0 and a very high release time, and ratio about 5:1 and threshold about -50 db
then comes the eq, the mids are a little bit more boosted than the highs.
then comes the reeverb:
use a reeverb with a big room.
then comes the essential:
a gate.
I used the free vst plugin floofish you get it here

and took the preset gate:snare and altered the release time to about the half.
then comes a little distortion, and here you have that "paul van dyk clap sound"

I hope you understand my english, if not, ask, if there are questions left, ask.

My guess is a quality reverb would help out tremendously here!

If you need a quality free reverb goto:

http://www.smartelectronix.com/~magnus/

and download Ambience. I swear it sounds better than any other software reverb I've heard.
