Hi guys,

I am thinking about purchasing this superb looking mixer, what is the general opinion of this mixer? any good? I like the look of it, just want your opinions on it.

Stanton SMX-401 Mixer

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers! :D

nay, don't buy it. It's just a revised verson of the rm3s which was a total pos. The past two stanton mixers i've owned took a crap after a few months (smx-501, rm-3s) Look at something else like a ecler smac30 pro.

Hi Simcut,

I don't know what the prices are in your country, but here in Holland there's a good mixer for the same price as the ecler: the Vestax PCV-275. Check it out! The look is great and the quality of the faders is also very good! Beside that, the SMX 501 is also a good mixer: it's not of the same quality of the 401! I hope I helped you something.

I have a SMX-401. I can vouch for it as a pretty good midrange, cost-wise, mixer. Whether the RM-3 was crappy or not, the 401 is good.

How long have you had it?

If it is anything like the RM-3S it will start leaking at about 6 months and be a POS after a year or two.

the only good stanton mixer i ever owned was the sk-4. Lasted 3years. The other two. smx-501 and rm-3s were total crap. I also heard bad things about their rm-100, sk-2f, sk-6. Since i started using vestax, rane, ecler i can't say i would recommend stanton. Simple... Avoid Stanton mixers!!

I've had my stanton rm3s for the past 2 yrs. I like it. I wanted the Vestax 275, but couldn't afford it. The only gripe I have about it is the sound quality compared tot he vestax. The smx-401 looks ok for the price imo. I've never used one so I cannot comment on how it sounds or feels. If it's prossible, you should check out a demo at your local store.

You got lucky i guess... My rm-3s' phono amp on ch.3 died after the mixer was 6months old, and the smx-501's crossfader curve somehow got screwed up after the first 2 weeks. Here's the thing: my gear mostly stays in my studio, i baby it, i got surge protector/power conditioner attached to all things, everything is wired correctly and w/o any groundloops whatsoever.

Once you go rane you never go back!
