Producing :(

I was wondering how you guys keep producing as a sideline in your life because its pretty much taking over mine. Does anybody feel the same?

I can't hold down a full time job because I always have idea's for melodies etc, at all hours of the day... so I end up missing days at work if I havent slept properly.

I think its a lack of discipline on my part aswell, but I'm honestly unable to shut off from it all.

So this, i guess is a cry for help... Can anybody relate to this and give me any advice? I'm feeling really low at the moment.

Same here, same here, soulmate :)

The evenings ends so fast and office hours are endless :)

Thats why I need private laptop at work. Always to tweak something.

Or just surf in forums and learn, learn, learn :) Positive side if not busy in office.

Well I haven't produced a single tune since I got my job... :(

Sinced I started at the university, I haven't had much time producing music, although 90% of my studies equals to reading thick books at home. :) So pretty much since the year of 2001 I have not been able to finish a single tune. Mostly I've been experimenting with short pieces of tracks etc. etc. I have not got the time to finish anything, it seems. If I would have normal workdays, I probably would have to quit making music, as I still seem to have some amount of self-discipline. I do the work starting from when I get up in the morning, and then if there's any free time for the rest of the day, I can use it to e.g. music.

A tape recorded might be your solution, as mentioned above. Sounds like a reasonable idea, then you can record your ideas immediately when you come up with them, no matter are you at work or at home.

What I often hear from other people is that they have taken on a part time job. Just working for four days in a week and then producing full time the other three days.
And keep a tape recorder, or note-bloc near when working, to immediately write down new ideas and stuff.
It also good to sometimes completely shut yourself of of producing. This will make room for new inspiration when you start producing again.

some pointers, hope they help. I have enough time now I'm nearly finished with my university degree, but I'm afraid I will have less time when I take on a job...

Wow, what a great response from you guys... I was'nt sure how this thread would go down.

Its really good to know that other people feel the same, especially when you start to think that you're the only person.

Great advice about the tape recorder, I had'nt even thought about that!

Thanks everyone for your advice... every reply so far has helped.

I still try to resist gettin' one of those standard jobs in hope for avoiding such scenarios. :D

But if there's no possibility to stop my current work, I have a special system to write down my melodies on a sheet of paper.

Perhaps a handy sound editor could help you, too.

I suffer too!

I've got the full time job and I try to make it to gym after work mon-thrs...

Each night I try get a little bit done on a song, even if its tweaking an effect. But weekends are my saviour! That's when I'm most productive. But these days, a song takes about a month to complete because most of the work is done on weekends.

But without my job, it would be a cardboard box for me...
