Promotion and Publicity

Something we don't talk about much here, but is equally important as theory and production is promotion.

They say that success in the music buisness is 50% talent and 50% promotion and who you know.

So what do you guys do to promote yourselves? Do you just send out demos and hope that you get contacted?

For me production is fun and easy, but promotion is hard and tedious. I spend lots of time networking with local DJ's and try to get them to play out my songs. I landed college radio gigs by networking with the DJ's that play electronic music shows. I manage to get some airtime on some internet radio stations (xtcradio.com is the best!). I hand out CD's at the major clubs in my area (which is freaking expensive). I'm working with a graphic designer on having a web-site created (which is also freakin expensive because he is a pro). What other things should I be doing without going broke?

send cds out to record labels, if u can't email them with a hyperlink to a 192k rip, it is surprising the amount of feedback you will actually get :)

let your friends listen to your music...

one of my friends was playing one of my tracks on her laptop a couple days ago at the office she is working at (i made an entire track out of the popular subway chime in toronto's transit system) and this ambassador for this Canadian student promotion agency heard it and he really enjoys the music and wants to work with me together in doing some music for their promotional campaign video...

i guess the main thing is that if you keep doing what you love and if you are good at it, people will come to you instead of you going to others... but yeah... send those cd's out as well... but don't worry too much about promotion... worry more about producing ;)
