Premier League referees to clamp down on diving

Premiership referees will be under orders next season to punish severely any players believed to be diving.

Officials believe players have perfected the art of going down in the penalty area.

"We will increase the intensity of action for simulation this coming season," said Keith Hackett, manager of the body that administers referees.

From next season, a dive will be punished by an immediate yellow card and a free-kick to the opposition.

The law has been in place for some time, but referees have been reticent about using it.

"When Gary Neville dived between two Arsenal players (in a recent Arsenal-Manchester United match), I left it. If I'd have had the courage to do the right thing, I would have booked him," said top referee Graham Poll.

"The next week, Gary Neville did exactly the same. It's very clear that players are excellent at simulation."

"I'm not saying they do practise but I find it hard to believe they are so good at something without practising."

Referees have identified four types of diving - when there is no contact, when minimal contact is exaggerated, when the diving player drags his leg and finally when a player overreacts.

In order to avoid a rash of bookings at the start of next season, meetings between the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers Association will be held to gain an understanding of the new directive.

Good idea
But i can see it causing a lot of problems for referees, if theyre not sure tho then they shouldnt give a yellow
This would be much better as a european directive tho cos its all the foreigners who are the cheating bastards

dont se the point in this, if they cant give the penalties people should have to start with.

english refs needs to be replaced with colina clones...

I'm all for it. There's far too much diving, it's approaching European levels. If it works here they might start adopting it in Europe. It's ashame it's had to come to this, referees have been too tame when really a bit of common sense is required. In European games (Champions League/UEFA Cup) it's a major problem!

Like any rule it has the potential to give referees problems, but at the end of the day common sense is all that's required.

And I'm convinced certain players do practise their diving (not mentioning any names). It's about time a few yellow cards/free kicks were given for blatant divers. Some players just wait for the 18yd line, cross it and look for the nearest player to clatter into.

problem is that sometimes the refs can book a player even though he did not dive and that can up a game .

Remember Totti in the 2002 world cup quarter final against South Korea  ...

The problem isn't the rule, it's the lack of common sense with some referees.

These rules give referees more freedom to apply common sense. How many times have you seen a player blatantly dive in front of the referee and nothing happens? Referees would probably often like to give a player a yellow card if he's been at it all game but feel it isn't really in his power to do so.

Of course mistakes will be made, but I feel it's a worthy price to pay to eradicate a now widespread form of cheating.

We really do need better referees though.

Before we start raising the question of better refereeing surely we've gotta raise the question of why do players still act on the field to gain an advantage?

Need to look more at the players and address their problems with 'accidental falls' rather than asking the ref's why they keep their cards in their pocket
