What makes a perfect dance tune?
If I had to classify what makes a perfect dance record for me, I'd have to say anything with a good bassline, clever percussion and annoyingly wicked keyboard noises and sassy use of the hi-hat. Tough with a camp twist. Most of the best dance tunes are really simple. It can be one little noise that makes it work. When records get too fast, they become un-sexy and I think a lot of the really hard stuff is for white boys who haven't discovered their hips. I don't like to write off any style of music but 'hard house' seems very angry and about as far away from the hips and heart as you can get.

I went and had an awesome time, but as usual because of my awesome friends more than anything.
Hadn't been to System on a Saturday in a long time (or to System at all since Lawler). A few obervations:
- rammed, way too rammed until about 4:30
- not a great or friendly crowd. Lots of pushing and shoving, very few apologies or "excuse mes".
- Boy George does not seem like a great technical DJ, or even a very good one. I mostly liked his track selection, very uplifting energetic songs. But very little mixing, and he'd let the flat stretches of tracks (where it's just the basic beat and not much else) run on and on until it went into a build-up. He didn't seem to try and mix it up.
- Kenny Glasgow is an amazingly skilled DJ.
- My friends are amazing (the ones probably reading this being Erika, Julia and Gavin - hi guys ;) ). As nice as it is to preparty with your favourite people, it's great to show up at the club and see people you love, without expecting it. The music was generally good and fun, but it was really the group of great people I was with that made it such a good time.
- Skipper is spinning at Element on April 29 (yes, a Thursday). This has nothing to do with last night, othe than that I ran into her and she told me. Still haven't seen her spin - you should all go.
- That's all. |

I have a whole theory on this that I'll explain sometime - but in 2 seconds: IMO good dj'ing is about playing the right song at the right time and transitioning well, not so much about being a technnical wizard. Sounds like BG did just that.
Glad to hear there was awesome tunes and good people to share them with. |

It's been a while since I've attempted an event sober, and if it weren't for a lot of friends being there I probably wouldn't have stuck around.
The music definitely roused my feet, but after Boy George came on the constant jostling became a little too unbearable for my taste so I decided to seek refuge in the seating area. I was short of impressed with BG, he kept his head down the entire time- all of 1 hour and took off. Kenny Glasgow rocked.
Anyway, I had a good time for the most part until my eyes got droopy.
I'm anxiously awaiting Garnier :eyes: |

Michael, you're too sweet. And I have to agree with you there 100%. It was indeed a fabulous surprise running into you and Sally and Victoria, and we had a wicked little crew going there for a long while... I had an absolute BLAST @ System last night and danced from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. I can't remember the last time I was @ System on a Saturday night. I also have to agree that although BG kept me dancing, and hard, throughout his set, Kenny Glasgow definitely stole the show, in my opinion. He brought it to the next level and my legs still feel like jelly :D Wicked, wicked tunes..... Does anyone know the name of the tune that had snippets of Human Traffic dialogue in it????? LOVE that track!!!!
Also great to see Skipper, cono_sur, Time2Burn, Red, and thanks very much for guest list John!!!!!!!!! Awesome night, and System rocks, as per usual. Still remains my fave club in TO  |

- I like the new system set up. The increased lighting in certain areas reduces the sketch factor. I do think it's way too bright in the front room though.
- KENNY was the star of the night. BG was fun, but I was also more drunk than I have been in a very long time at that point. :nervous:
- Thanks to Ryan for the admission hook up.
- Nice seeing Erika, Michael, Sally, torontobarfly.
- Left at 5:30, I thought it was 3:30. The place kept rockin, so I didn't notice how late it was. |

well, if trainwrecks are very 'in your face' i have a hard time enjoying teh set.
also, technical skills are important for some. dj's who are technical wizards can make amazing musics w/ layering and other techniques. the difference between a dj that just plays tracks back to back and dj who use various technique of creating his/her own music is that the first is merely a music medium and the 2nd is a creator of music. |
