hey people,
sorry to start another thread about acapella's, but i was curious if anyone has ever successfully negociated with a record company for an acapella.
i've got this song in mind that has perfect lyrics...the artist is not trance, but not mainstream so i think that might help any chance of getting one, but i don't think its very likely.
how about has anyone ever paid to liscense samples from a label...how much might something like that cost? i really want to approach this in a professional manner. i've got to have this acapella... |

Honestly don't be afraid to ask...but ask the right person...tell them that you are interested in doing a remix and you are looking for the vocal tracks only...there is possibility that you may get them for a price which depending on the label could be A LOT or a little...also they might even work out a deal with you if you do end up releasing the track they get a peice of the action. Honestly it never hurts to ask...as long as your confedent that you are going to complete the job then give it a go!

What you need to ask for, is to do a "spec remix" of a song. In this case, they should be giving you the parts you ask for to do the remix, with the permission of the artist of course, and in the end, if your finished product gets big enough to make profit, you have to negotiate your pay with the label/artist, since the artist still get royalties and the label owns the license and you've added intellectual property to some1 else's and made money from it.
A lot of remixes get done both that way and just by asking to do a normal remix, whereas you'd be paying for it. Many remixers end up making more money than the original artist, b/c remixing breaks the genre barriers in some cases and allows for more prominent radio play and multimedia releases ie: vinyl, CD, compilations, etc. |

| thanks for the replies fellas..."specs remix" sounds good to me. as for who to contact within the label limit...who would i go to? do i try and contact the artist and hope for artist support or contact someone within the label, who might that be? |

| Note that they want a demo CD before they even consider giving you an acapella. If you won't gain them money just because of your name on the remixer credits, they're kind of wary about letting that stuff out. So I've heard from others, anyways, because I've never gone through the process myself. |
