recording problems

Alright, heres the deal. I'm trying to record my mixes with cool edit, by running a small rca to 1/8th" cable out of the master out in my mixer, which then connects to a 20ft 1/8th" cable running to my sound card's line in (the cable is about 5 feet too long but thats all I could find at radio shack). From there, I run another 20ft 1/8th" back out of my sound card's output, which connects to the male 1/8th" of my klipsch speakers in front of my turntables.

Now, I can get the sound to come through, but there are problems. For one thing, there's a harsh delay between the sound coming out of my speakers (which is running through a good 45ft of cable, which shouldn't even matter though) and my headphones (which comes straight out of the mixer). This pretty much makes it unusable in the first place. Besides that, theres a pretty sharp hum coming out of my sound card, which would ruin the quiet parts of any song (unless the hum is a result of the output, then the recording would come out clean and I'd just have to deal with the inconvienence).

EDIT: Ok, I fixed the delay... now about that damn hum...

Any ideas?

Ok, I got an extension cord and got both my decks and computer on the same electrical outlet, and that cut off about 95% of the hum. So we're in business.

Now, does anyone know how to get cool edit pro to record my mixing to a wav? I know its hearing the music, yet when it records I see no waveform, no nothing.

Check the levels of you line in on the Volume Mixer of windows (I presume that’s what you’re using).

yea.. the hum could be coming from your microphone out of your soundcard if u have one hooked up..... when i had a mic in b4, there would be feedback... etc.

hey guys maybe you can help me out too...i've been looking for searching for the answer to this question but haven't come upon it..

1. I bought a 6ft RCA Y to minijack cable to connect my Vestax 275 to my computer
1. EXCEPT that when I was about to hook this cable up, I noticed that my VESTAX has two MASTER OUTS.
3. One is a RCA MASTER OUT that I am ALREADY USING to connect my mixer to my stero/amp.
4. The other only MASTER OUT left doesn't fit with my "RCA Y split to mini jack cable". The L and R slots are too big.

What can I do? I was thinking of skipping out on the mixer to stero/amp connection and using my comp's speakers. But my computer speakers are external. And if I put in the RCA Y cable from my mixer to my computer's line in, I have to take out my external computer speakers cable.

I WAS able to skip the mixer to stero/amp connection, connect my mixer to my comp's line in. AND connected my computer speakers to what I'm assuming is another line in/out. That actually gave me sound on my comps speakers, albeit TY. BUT I can't record...I'm using Cool Edit by the way.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated although I'm sure I probably confused a lot of you.

Peace.

Well I left the master out connection from mixer to my stero amp. I found a "record out" on my stereo/amp and connected the y part of the cable there to the line in of my computer....

don't know if that would work - i still can't record, and my line in is checked on the audio properties.

I got things working. The delay was an echo from my sound card trying to play out the line in twice. The hum was fixed when I used an extension cord to plug my computer and decks/mixer all into the same outlet (my stepdad, who is an EE, informs me that a mixer and computer on seperate outlets with a connection between them could fry either one, so heads up).

As for recording in cool edit, it was just a little detail. Everythings working right now.

Heres how I did it (I also have a 275): I used a RCA > 1/8" male cord out of my mixer's master out. That connects to a long female > male 1/8" cord. The male went into my sound cards Line In. I used another long cord (the same kind) to run out my sound card's Line Out, back over to my mixing table, the female end plugging into the male 1/8" of my klipsch PC speakers. You can get all these cables at Radio Shack.

Once everythings plugged in, go into your sound card's settings and make sure your Record function is set to Line In, make sure all the volume levels are set right, and you should be good to go.

Man, so many issues that people have which could be avoided if only they had Record Outs on the mixer.

Am I correct in assumeing the PCV-275 does not have a record out? My crappy Numark has record out so all I got to do to record is hook it up to the computer. No need to mess with sending the master to the soundcard then connect that to the amp/speakers.
