Diego Maradona is critically ill in the intensive care unit of an Argentinian hospital suffering from acute heart failure and breathing difficulties.
The 43-year-old World Cup winner was admitted to the Swiss-Argentine hospital in Buenos Aries as he began to have trouble with his breathing, and is now heavily sedated on a ventilator.
The former Argentina captain has a history of drug problems and local reports have already been suggesting that an overdose was the cause of Maradona's problems.
Dozens of fans of the South American legend have already began congregating outside the hospital, who have said that he was suffering from congestive heart failure caused by high blood pressure.
"Maradona is receiving medication to strengthen the heart; and as he developed acute respiratory failure he was put on a ventilator and therefore is heavily sedated," said the hospital statement.
"The reaction to the medication has been favourable, and he is stabilised."
Maradona's doctor Alfedo Cahe said that the next day or two would be the crucial period in his recovery - but would not comment on reports of an overdose.
Maradona's ex-wife, father and two children have all been to the hospital to see him, as has Carlos Bilardo - who coached the successful Argentina side that won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
The former Napoli and Barcelona star is widely regarded as one of the best players to ever grace world football, but he has not had the best of times since hanging up his boots.
Fears surrounding his health have been gathering as he continued to pile on the pounds, while allegedly also struggling with his drugs problems.
It now seems that all his problems have taken their toll on one football's greats, and fans will be facing an anxious wait to see how he progresses in hospital. |

| Stupid to start doing drugs. And you don't think that one of the greatest players (if not the greatest)of all time should start. But I guess no1 is perfect after all... |
