I know this might not be news to some but for what it's worth:

Ottawa banning import, resale of baby walkers
Last Updated Wed, 07 Apr 2004 18:31:17
OTTAWA - The federal government is imposing an outright ban on the import or sale of baby walkers, making Canada the first country to make the devices illegal.

The ban also includes the resale of walkers at flea markets and garage sales.

Health Minister Pierre Pettigrew is scheduled to make the announcement on Wednesday.

The devices are designed for babies who can sit up, but not walk on their own. Health Canada says the baby walkers can tip down stairs, or allow a child to reach dangerous items such as cooking pots.

A review of Canadian hospital admissions between April 1, 1990, and July 25, 1992, found 436 children under the age of about 18 months had been injured in walkers. Most suffered soft-tissue injuries, concussions, burns or fractures.

Other researchers have estimated that a full third of all babies using walkers will be injured. The devices allow them to travel quite a distance in a short period of time – before parents realize they are out of reach.

Since 1989, retailers have obeyed a voluntary ban on selling baby walkers, and no new models have been manufactured in Canada since then.

The federal government is bringing in tougher rules because more imported baby walkers have been reappearing in the marketplace in recent years, and parents don't seem as aware of the dangers as they once were.

Sure, let's blame baby-walkers for the irresponsibility of the parents. Not that I care about baby-walkers. Children are way too spoiled here in Canada, mostly cause parents are too busy to care.

Here is a better idea...

ban stupid negligent parents that allow kids to hurt themselves when babywalkers are used improperly...

Back when i was a kid, leaving kids alone to hurt themselves was called child neglect....

ing government.... ban this ban that..... just pay your taxes and shut up LOL

ok.
My 2 cents.
My parents are probably the best parents i have seen especially to today's standards. They would never leave us with a baby sitter or even leave our side at any time. My brother back in 1978 managed to knock down the stair gate and rolled off a 25 step ceramic stairway.

Thankfully, the wheel got caught on the second post and he was dangling there. Escaped certain death.

Now, in no way are my parents negligent, to busy to care and unfit to have kids. My mother always told me if every parent were like them there would be no problems in the world. Words i still believe.

My point is accidents happen.

Remember that unfortunate incident in montreal when the father went to dig out the car with his baby inside and the car filled with co2.

While we are at it - why not outlaw McDonald's as well ? I wonder how many deaths annually are as a direct result of eating in McDonalds ??

I think its an extremly responsible move by the gov't

there is no advantage to babies aided in walking(proven) and the things have a high center of gravity, like SUV that make them easy to tip.
They are a danger, and they are un needed.

And why not ban McDonalds? Becuase people have a choice to eat it or not..babies cant say 'no I dont want to be in the walker'

and they are working towards healthier food, and cigarette bans. ALL positive steps for our health.
