Protecting your gear

Sounds gay, but when you've spent several K on a system, how do you protect it ?

Kinda reminds me of my grandma with blankets all over her new couches LOL.

But seriously, dust is yucky. And it's so hard to get out from between the knobs and faders ...

Hi,

Sounds familiar! I have my old Yamaha CS1x standing here in front of a window (which really isn't the best position taking into consideration the sunlight), and it seems to need constant care. A couple of times a week I use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of the dust, but I use my own custom made, soft "addon part" not to harm or scratch the surface with the vacuum cleaner's hard plastic. Sometimes I also use a small and dry, non-static dust rag. Under the keys it seems like there's a bunch of dust, though. :( And yeah, it doesn't seem like the blue colour has become any lighter/fainter of the direct sunlight. Seems like quality stuff. :)

Soft synths need less care, obviously. ;)

Main thing is to keep a dustcover on them whenever they're not in use. Dust will really up the voltage-controlled knobs and such. They sell computer dust covers at computer stores, it's basically just clear plastic tailored to fit over the monitor/keyboard/printer, etc... And if dust is already in there (and you'll notice it) just get a can of air.

What does such a cover approximately cost? It should be able to cover a full-length hardware synth (Yamaha CS1x). Now when the summer comes it could be well worth buying such a cover to protect it from direct sunlight. You said computer stores have them, do you think instrument/piano stores also have them? I wonder, perhaps not...

I push the post :D

The summer is coming ... that means open windows ... that means lot of dust ... so be careful

So true. I think the worst time of year is spring, as there's lots of green stuff from the birches in the air, and it tends to easily get thru window hatches etc. I have covered my synth now (something I haven't done tó my car, which is more green than blue this time of year, huh ).
