I already tried searching the boards for this and can't seem to find anything. I guess what I am looking for is a sort of "Electronic Music for Dummies" guide.

For instance, what makes Trance different from Techno or House. Or what makes Euro-Dance different from anything else? Is there a breakdown of what's what? BAck when I read up about techno (lol back in 1997 i think) I remember something about anything labled "Hardcore" had to deal wtih the number of beats per second (bps) (ie. happy hardcore was something like 100-200bps or something). And where does progressive enter the mix? Industrial?

Also, what about some of the more technical terms. I read these boards from time to time and i see the word "prog" a lot. Something about "he maxed the prog bar" or something like that.

HOpefully i've given you some insight into my confusion. Here are some examples of artists I like but i'm not sure where they all go in categories of electronic music.

paul van dyk
ian van dahl
paul oakenfold
scooter
NIN (i know it's more industrial)
dj tiesto
crystal method
prodigy - fat of the land
ferry corsten

anyway, thanks in advance for your help, and i greatly apologize if this has been discussed already.

scooter > theives
NIN (i know it's more industrial) > industrialish rock
dj tiesto > trance
crystal method > breaks

It's mainly just experience of listening to lots of different types of music and getting used to the things that make them unique. It's made difficult because genres blur and evolve constantly, and so must be split down into sub-genres and time goes on.

Have a look at this (the words that go with it are opinionated and funny but the samples are accurate):

I was just having a conversation with my brother a few days ago about this. While I can listen to a piece of music and tell which style it is, it's hard to put it into words to explain it to someone who hasn't heard much/any EDM(for me anyways).

I'd like to see what kind of answers this question recieves.
