well first... little hardware double check... you plugged it into the line-in right? second when u click record in sound forge u have to make sure the source of the record is coming from your SOUND card's line in... to do this, go to Options---> Preferences --> Wave Tab.... now make sure your sound card is selected under the "Record" drop down box. if that doesn't work, let me know.

I think I did everything right... I plugged in the cable (the 1/8 end) into my computer line in (the blue hole).... Then I went to optionspreferences/wave and i selected where it says

Playback: SB Live! Wave Device

Record: SB Live! Wave Device

and then I put apply and ok and i can hear the music from my speakes bu as soon as I hit the record button i hear a little static for like a second and then it goes mute

i dont mean to be insulting your intelligence but go to your sound options (where you can play with the volume meter... control panel -> sound options) and go Adjust Sound Volume. Go to the Audio tab and under Recording, go to Volume. Make surey our line-in is checked off. If that doesn't work, i'd be kinda confused as to what is going on.

Its no that.... that the first thing i checked.... the Line In is NOT in mute.....

Its really wierd i dont get it because as long as i dont click on the record button, the music plays out of my computer speakers perfectly but as soon as i click on record I get a static sound of about 1/4 second and then it goes completley mute and if i close the 'record' box the music starts playing again... AHHHHHHH its pissing me off! i want to record!!!!!!!:whip: :nervous:

Any other things that could be causing this?

Ok.... I downloaded another program called CD WAVE and the same thing happened.. when I pressed record it went mute so i guess this means its not soundforge that has the problem.... :nervous: :nervous:

-GO into your sound card's volume control panel again.
-click on the options menu
-click properties
-click the dot beside recording
-make sure any input connections are checked and outputs are un-checked in the list
-make sure no inputs are muted or too low volume.

that should be it.

next..
-make sure you plugged into the right input jack (either microphone in or line in).
-make sure you're coming out of your mixers amp out or booth out or tape out
-mkae sure in your recording program that it's recording function setting/preferences are set to record from the input you plugged into.

after that... RTFM (or search the forums)
