U.S. Army Ranger and Ex-NFL Player Pat Tillman Killed in Afghanistan
April 23 — Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who swapped a glamorous football career to enlist in the U.S. Army, has been killed in action in Afghanistan, ABCNEWS has learned. The 27-year-old former football player was killed in direct action during a firefight in Afghanistan, Pentagon sources told ABCNEWS. But there were no further details available.
A former member of the Arizona Cardinals, Tillman, along with his brother Kevin, enrolled with the U.S. Army Rangers after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Last year, the brothers were awarded an Arthur Ashe Courage Award meant for individuals whose contributions transcend sports. The award was accepted by their younger brother, Richard, while the brothers were away.
Tillman, an unrestricted free agent, spurned a $9 million, five-year offer sheet from the St. Louis Rams in 2001 to join the Army. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Tillman was an exceptional student with a 3.84 grade point average through college and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in marketing.
The Tillman family has been notified, according to a Pentagon source. "
yet another fatality in the war. This one hits close to the sports world. |

| Truly sad, like any other soldier being killed, but it is a bit different as he was an athlete and better known than others. RIP Tillman and all the other soldiers killed. |

| Especially sad because he refused to receive any special attention from the media just because he was a football player. He didn't consider himself superior to the soldier next to him. A truly unselfish person. |

| Not a lot of people would have turned down lucrative contract and a "American Dream" lifestyle to work in the military and fight in Afghanistan. Really commendable and can't help but be proud that he helped protect us. |

A true hero in my eyes. Not only because he sacrificed his life to protect his country, but also because of what his loyalty and dedication. Truly admirable.
The world would be a better place with more people like Pat Tillman. |

| It seems like just yesterday when the news was following his decision to leave his football career and enlist in the service knowing that he had the potential to be deployed to the war. I have a lot of respect for him, his brother, and their family. His story touched a lot of people. |

| definatly tragic... :( we are fortunate we arnt going through what his family is going through or any soldier who has fallen, many of them die at such young age ..they die before they truely experiance life. Just depressing sometimes thinking about those things. Truely shows that there is never a winner in war we all loose in the end. |

Absolutely! We are all going to miss him. Every soldier knows his duty and that is to protect our rights and freedoms. He works with his brothers and will not be denied by a terrorist group willing to take over his life or anybody else's.
Oh and, Badbad, I bet you want that gun in your avatar right at Osama's head! |
