How many languages do you speak? (pg. 3)

It really depends on your definition of "speaking", because it is actually a very subjective thing.
First of all, no matter how much you study, you can only master one language with excelency (even if you live in a bi-lingual country, you don't speak both languages perfectly - you'll have more skills in one of them, no matter how good you are in the other one).
I believe you want to know how well we can understand and be understood in a certain number of languages. Once again, it's relative: although I'm supposedly a speaker of intermediate Japanese (which means I should be able to understand daily conversations), but due to lack of practice, I often have to stop and think before saying a more complicated sentence. On the other hand, my Spanish is supposed to be horrible (as I don't study it for quite a long time and speaking Portuguese every day only get things worse), but I can be understood (and understand) without major problems.
So I can say I speak Portuguese, some English (I wrote this post, didn't I? :p), some Spanish, a little Italian, a little Russian, a little Japanese and I can write (and read :D) in Korean...
I'm voting for the 6+ one, just in case. |

I'm very impressed with how many people know more than one language. I only know English. I can speak a little bit of Spanish and I can read it a little, but I am far from being fluent. |
So the Dutch flag next to your post merely represents your Dutch heritage? (sorry if this is a too personal question, I'm just interested) |
