Computer Speaker Subwoofer Died

The subwoofer on my 400W Altec Lansing 641 speaker system died yesterday. What a friggin' bummer! I read up on Internet and seems it was an original design flaw. You had to turn off the power to the system from the wall every day instead of just turning off the power on the remote controller else it would eventually fry some component. Who woulda though of that? Poster said he called Altec Lansing and tech there told him about it. BTW, they discontinued the system.
Oh, well. Still got the 4 satellites and salvaged the two 6" cones from the subwoofer box.
All is not lost. Got some 400W Logitech Z560 speakers enroute. Should be here in 2-3 days. I'll use my Altec Lansing satellites along with the Logitech ones and have 8 plus the subwoofer then. In the meantime I was forced to use an old 28W system from my junkyard to listen to music. Can't stand listening to Trance without the Thump!

To top it all, the 641 subwoofer box is glued together after assembly and it is virtually impossible to get to the circuitry without cutting into the box. I got pissed and used a sledgehammer. Lol! The Logitech Z560s are better rated anyhow...

I've had them for about a year. Dude, I am DEADLY SERIOUS here.
If your subwoofer still works, then you might be lucky. Do not use the remote to turn off the speakers. You HAVE TO turn the power off to the subwoofer itself! If you do so, you will be saved!!!!
I found out the hard way along with others. It was a basic design flaw which they will not fix since they discontinued production.
I loved them up until yesterday when nothing happened = no thump, no sound at all even.

| Should have gotten a Klipsch set. I had a problem with a transistor that went bad in my amp on my 500w 5.1 system and they told me to send the woofer back. About I week later I received an entirely new set of 5.1s, so I have 2 sets now. :D |

| Strange. I've had them for over 2 years now and never had a problem. Maybe it's because I never turn them off at all? |

Comparable except Klipsch is more than double in price. Logitech speakers I'm getting run $151 which includes shipping. Klipsch run about $335 without. The Altec Lansings I got were on sale at $135 including shipping. When I hook up 8 satellites I reckon I'll beat the Klipsch.

Instead of buying very over priced computer speakers. Why dont you just get a proper DAC.
Computer speakers suck. period. They are made cheap and overpriced.
Also the sound card on your pc sucks. (all sound cards are bad.) There is far too much harmonic distortion for a proper signal to go anywhere.
Get yourself a good DAC. Hook that up to a proper low impedance amp and some good room speakers.
It will sound soo much better your not going to believe that you ever used computer speakers.
edit try this one out
