What the hell? I'm an Australian, and I don't have a clue what day Americans commemorate their fallen soldiers, but that doesn't mean that I'm ignorant in general. Can you name the day(s) on which the Germans, the Ethiopians, the British, the Austrians & the Spaniards remember their citizens who've died in wars? I think not.
If anyone's deserving of the 'rolleyes' emotion - it's you. :rolleyes:

No no, feel free to ask any time, at least you're actually interested in things going outside your country.

For some reason we have our public holiday on a Sunday, whilst everyone else has theirs on the Monday. After all, why else would we have a day to commemorate our soldiers heroism in war, other than to have a day off work? :p
Whiskers - go flame elsewhere - ANZAC day doesn't like flame wars. :thepirate |

its basically a day where we remember all the aussies/new z that died at gallipoli. coz sum english general didnt give a about us and sent us to get slaughtered. |
Close but not quite. He was actually the "First Lord of the Admiralty" and his name was Winston Churchill. It wasn't a bad idea, since most of the army was tied down on the Western Front, why not use the Navy to land a force at Gallipoli and knock out the Ottoman Empire?
Do not forget that this is also an important day for the Turkey. Kamel Ataturk led the troops which stopped the invading forces and he later became the first president of the Republic of Turkey.
There are three memorials that I know of. One in Australia, one in New Zealand and of course one in Gallipoli. This tribute from Ataturk is inscribed on all three:
Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ....
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the
Johnnies and the Mehemets to us where they lie side by side
here in this country of ours ... you, the mothers, who sent
their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears;
your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land they have
become our sons as well.

| When I was in elementary school I acted in a play where my character's name was Anzac. The play was called "The Geigo Effect", about computers that took over the school. |

Hmmm well America has two days to remember verterans ... one is memorial day which was passed soon after the civil war to commemorate fallen Union and Confederate soldiers. The other is Veteran's Day (Or armistice day as it should be known) which is on 11-11 to commemorate the cease-fire of WW-1. The Germans have a Day of National Mourning which is in november and was started after ww1 as well, hitler bastardized it into hero's day or something like that, and finally it was recommissioned by the Germans sometimes after the 50's. Britain and you Aussies celebrate the end of ww1 in something called Remembrance day as well. I have no idea about Austria or Spain. Ethiopia probably celebrates being the only African nation to be free from european colonialism by the end of the 19th century by successfully defeating the Italians in the battle of Adowa in March of 1896, but I can't be sure if they actually celebrate it. |
