CD's vs Vinyl

I'm curious to know which one people favour.. and what the pros and cons of each are. I've done a bit of mixing on vinyl and was surprised to discover that the platters on CD players like the CDJs don't actually rotate. Are there ones that do? And how is the scratching on CDJs, is it instant and authentic.. or is there a delay and does it sound a little strange.

I can see the appeal of CD players over vinyl with the price of records and that with CD players you can play your own material (I also produce a little with Acid Pro).

So basically I'm wondering what the appeal of vinyl is and why it hasn't become obsolete in the professional scene with the advent of quaility CD players like the Pioneer series given that CDs have superior sound quaility and are much cheaper and easier to obtain.

There is a sticky thread in this forum called "Vinyls vs. CDs"...I recommend having a look.

do a search....every time someone asks this question it goes into multiple, multiple pages. It's a complicated issue...and there are a lot of pros and cons of each. Personally I prefer vinyl (although I am picking up a set of cd players to complement my tts as soon as i have money).

To answer your other question..the denon s3000 and s5000, the new numarks, and the new technics cd players all rotate.

also, Pioneer CDJs ARE NOT cheaper than turntables. not any, except for the smallest one, the 100S. the rest (800/1000/1000Mk2) cost $600 and ~$1000-1100 respectively.

what you do save on is vinyl. but if you're just gonna burn your mp3's, than it is NOT cool. sure, for fecking around in your room it's ok, but if you make money, so should the producers.

the platter not spinning onthe higher end CDJs is sometimes viewed as a good thing (search).

and the sound quality of vinyl is superior. as opposed to a geniune CD vs vinyl, the difference is small, but noticeable to some of the crazy audiophiles we have here on TA.

the scratching on Pio CDJs is quite kickass, IMO.

pro's of CD:
no cost of cartridges/stylii
no record wear
easier to carry
you can copy, customize, etc your own cd's
play your own stuff
MANY MANY functions on good cd decks

con's:
inferior sound quality
higher unit cost
some stuff just doesn't come out on CD
some clubs don't have CD players, just turntables

Thanks for that. Btw.. when I said cheaper.. I was refering to the cost of the vinyls. They can be quite expensive around here and I know all about copying mp3's to cd's and trying to pass them off as legit, I know alot of people who try it.

But I know of plugins that can add the authentic 'vinyl' sounds to your tracks when mastering them.. up to you whether you accept this or not.. personally I can't tell the deffernce between the simulation and the real thing.. but I'm not a serious audiophile.

Vinyl ain't that expensive...$7-$10?

I dislike these cd's vs vinyl posts.

They're like comparing apples and oranges.

And yeah, it is illegal to spin burnt CDs in a club unless it is your own production/tracks.

Yeah thanks.. I'm working my way through the sticky thread.. but its a long thread.

I think I've pretty much made up my mind now anyway. I think I'll get a set of CDJ's or something similar and maybe one turntable simple to record the songs that I can't get on CD. (Mainly cause I hate the idea of the quailty deteriorating with use)

Might have to have a try of a few CD Players cause I cant imagine beat matching tracks with platters that arn't moving.
