I won a full ride Mazda Foundation scholarship through Youth for Understanding that is paying my way to stay in Japan for six weeks this summer. Is there anything there aside from the obvious landmarks/temples/historical sites that are not as popular that I should consider seeing? Has anyone been to Japan that can give me some insight on what living there is actually like? I'll be living with a host family. I'm really excited!!

I had to put together a resume with the general application to the Youth for Understanding exchange program. I had to write a couple of essays regarding leadership and why I want to go abroad.

My credentials: (not a pissing contest)
GPA: 3.6
Recommendations: Great ones, from my language teachers, english teachers, and social studies teachers
Athletics: starter for varsity lacrosse team; captain of summer/fall/winter lacrosse teams; member of all-state lacrosse team as a sophomore (last year)
Extracurriculars: Captain of "Quizbowl" team; Commentary editor for school newspaper; member of National Honor Society; member of Minnetonka Honor Society (school thing); former Vice-chair of Minnetonka Teenage Republicans (dont flame)
Past Abroad Experience: People 2 People Student Ambassador to Australia/New Zealand

This was what I put down, and had to go through an interview that went extremely well with a YFU coordinator. I put down on my application the 3 or 4 scholarships I was eligible for - these included the Okinawa Peace Scholarship, the Mazda one, a Japan-US Senate Exchange scholarship, and some other one (i think a Honda one).

And anyways, lots of recommendations for Japanese sexx0r. I knew there were such fetishes; can someone clarify the legality of prostitution in Japan (not that I would ever do such a thing as an exchange student >_>)?
