Mixing Junkie XL songs
View this Thread in Original format

How come he doesn't include any standard intro's in his songs? The beat starts at around 1:30 and goes right into it. How do you mix his tracks?

Songs off the top of my head:

infusion - legacy (junkie xl remix)
bt - sonambulist (junkie xl)
dave gahan - dirty sticky floors (junkie xl)

etc etc

Hey if Oakie can do it so can you :toocool:

Lets see.. there are three things you need to learn. 1)Experimentation 2) Experimentation 3) More creativtiy with experimentation. Having songs that aren't the same creates room for the dj to get creative. You can mix into the middle of the song and other crazy like taht

In the case of Infusion, here's how I heard Max Graham do it (NYE 2k3 set)... You have 1:30 of an intro to work with... You can use the high percussion that plays lightly to beatmatch the tracks (you should be able to match them entirely, but it'll sound okay if you get them decently close). At about 1:15 into Legacy, drop out the other track.... you've got a ten second breakdown right before Legacy's percussion starts banging. The crowd should dig it.

weird, i thought those jxl tracks you listed are some of the easiest to mix.. want tough? try BT - flaming june :/

what me and my friends normally do for tracks that are tricky is just go put your stylus on a part where the track is full on. beatmatch it to have it at the correct pitch. be sure to let it run a bit to make sure you've pitched it right.

then, pull it back, throw the incoming track's intro over the live track's beats. it shouldn't be too hard to do if you know the track well and you listened to it a bith thru yer headphones to get the flow of it down. from there on, just get creative with it.

here, Max Graham threw in Jase From Outta Space's Do What You Want (Infusion Remix) with its intro. he just basically had it pitched, and let go of the record just as the vocal started on beat with the live track. then he faded out the live track as the echo effects were still running wild over the vocals. was good.

yeah Legacy is a dream to mix. You can hear it coming a mile away but if it goes out a little its easy to fix up.

In the "Dave Gahan - Dirty Sticky Floors" song- I let the intro play over the beat (with out decreasing volume). I think the intro is like 1:30 min, so you have to get the timing right- Basically as the ending of one record happens, the
beat from "Dirty Sticky Floors" starts up. Just be aware of when the beat comes in because it probably won't be on.;)
