I'm (hopefully) gonna be getting Reason soon, and at the moment I've not got a keyboard or a Midi-soundcard of any kind, so I was wondering how important it is to have a keyboard, I know it's not 100% necessary but is it gonna be really annoying?

And another question, a more stupid one this time. I've used the Reason demo to try and learn it a little bit, but how do I actually input my own melody (by using a keyboard, or clicking on some kind of software keyboard, or otherwise)? Which machine do I use?

It's not necessary but certainly helpful.

You open the piano roll and draw the notes in there...on the sequencer there's a button to the upper-left side. Click on that and you'll be taken to the details screen which has, amongst other things, the piano roll.

It depends on your previous level of musical experience. If you know music theory, it's mostly not required (but still helpful) But if you have 0 musical background, it's practically required because a piano roll is rather hard to get a good melody out of by just placing notes (unless you know theory and chord progressions)

when i started out with reason i got the m-audio audio quattro card, its ok, there is much better cards out there. i also got the oxegen 8 midi keyboard. its also ok but there are better things out there. that is the system that i have now. it works for what i need it to do and i dont feel as though my skillz(cus im a sheltered white kid, aka bawler 4 sheezy) have exceeded my equipment yet. plus i need to be able to move it readily 4 times a year and it is good for that. start small, but with something you can grow into.

Ye I do understand music theory and chord progressions, that kinda stuff's not a problem for me. I can see myself having more trouble just getting the thing to work and sound good.

thanks guys..
