| Is the SMAC 42 any different from the SMAC 40? If it is, which one is better/worse, and what are the differences between the two? I know little about the 40, and even less about the 42 (as I just found it). Thanks :D |

| Theres a 42???, never heard of it, is it new?, I'll try and look, but I can say that the smac 40 is a wicked piece of equipment, can't go wrong, its on my short list of mixers I'm looking to get. |

The Smac x2 series were the ancestors of the actual Smac Pro series.
So the Smac Pro 40 is the update of the 42 (same thing for the Pro 30, newer version of the 32). If I remember well there was even a version in between : Smac Pro 3 and 4. They'r still very good mixers though.
I don't really remember the differences (I had the specs a while ago, but I threw them away). I think the faders got improved, some minor quirks adjusted (some batches of the 32/42 had problems with the phones outputs). I also think they changed the way of manufacturing of the PCB boards. And with the Pro 30/40 they also changed the design abit.
The quality is pretty good on those mixers. I'd even say, if you're not on a very tight budget, they are excellent starter mixers (they cost a little more than Gemini and consorts, but not nearly as much as the big monsters out there). The positioning of the faders might look awkward, but in use you'll see that it's very well thought out (faders are angled as not to strain your wrists). |

the only two things i'd like to be added to Smacs are:
a PFL/LIVE CUE fader! why do so few mixers have these? i learned to spin on a Stanton SK6 mixer, which is basically a POS, but it had one. not that i NEED one to mix at all, it's just quite useful for previewing a transition, experimenting with it, before having to actually do it.
the phones jack should be at the _bottom_ of the mixer, not the top. kind of a stupid mistake if ya ask me. |
