question about some turntables

I recently saw some turntables for sale in a thrift store. I've been wanting to get some for a while now. I don't know too much about what is good and what isn't though. There are two Technics direct drive turntables (I remember they said "quartz" on them). It also comes with a basic looking Numark mixer and a coffin. They said it was missing the "diamond" or "dime end" or something, I couldn't understand the guy. He said it was expensive to replace. He said he will have the price tommorow. Should I even bother trying to buy this stuff, or should I save up for the top of the line best stuff (that wont be for a LONG time). Any comments are appreciated, thanks.

if you can't understand the guy you should ask him for more information or a clear explanation...

If they are Technics 1200s it may be worth it if he gives them to you for a good price.

You can usually pick up 2 used techs on ebay for around $600, so use that as your guide.

i cant imagine both turntables having the same exact problem or missing diamond. maybe he was talking about the needles? needles are sometimes diamond tipped.

i think you need more info. find out exactly what is wrong with them and call technics for pricing on repair. maybe that would help you make your decision.

also find out what model the numark mixer is.

I would go back, get a price, and go off that. If they're 1200's, then it might be worth it. As far as the diamond, the only thing I could think of would be the stylus . . .

well unless hes talking bout the quartz crystal as being "the dimond" but how the hell would he have lost that?!?!?

ask them if you can turn it on... it would really suck if you picked them up and they don't turn on... missing diamond sounds like the guy's trying to say that the needle's missing... that can be easily replaced...

heck, if the thing says 1200s, it works, and its cheap, by all means, pick it up.

Yea, in the worst case scenario you can still get on eBay and flip those around for a profit.

ok well i went back there today. it turns out they are Technics 1200 MKII. they had them locked away in the back and I couldn't find out the model of the numark mixer. He said call back for the price in a few hours. He also said there are an additional 2 turntables there and they are all missing the diamond (I'm guessing he's reffering to the stylus???) If I have enough $$ it looks like I'll pick em up before anyone else does. Thanks for the help, I'll have an update if I get them...I'm excited now!
