Order of FX on instruments

M8eys, got a question :D
What order should you use for you fx on instruments? I know you should compress first (in general, if you compress) and then through the other filters. The equaliser should be the last. But in what order should you put reverb, stereo-enhancer, delay, phaser, chorus, ... ? It really makes difference but is there a rule for this (yeh the thing which sounds best, but what sounds best?)
Thanks for your help and time! :p
Cheers

| I think its down to experimentation and taste. Give different combos a try and you will gey YOUR sound.:D ;) |

This is what I know for sure -> LIMITER last connected effect!
Its pointless to use limiter and after that EQ (boost some freq.) -> clipping 100%
But about creative effets like delay and reverb or phraser it's all of question of taste.

There are no rules in music mate
just practice and listen what sounds best
but most h/w machines have something like this : eq > dly > rev > variation (but my an1x has variation before eq :p ) |

there are no rules - what sounds good is good. however, delay and reverb are usually being put on send channels, and not in the instrument channel themselves. i once put a distortion on send fx, and my friend put a compressor in send fx by mistake, but when he sent some audio to those sends, some rather nice sounds came out .... so do not bother with that. do what sounds good to you and play, the point is to have some fun making music! :) |

sigh
it always matters, just think for 1 second, it aint that hard you know.
example
eq > reverb, the reverb will only affect the eq'd frequencies
reverb > eq : the reverb will affect the frequencies before the eq so creating a slight (or big) difference depending on how much you eq and reverb. |

I've always put the reverb after the EQ because otherwise you get the effect of EQing the reverb and that's not my intention when I want to EQ and reverb something :)
my intention is always to EQ the original sound and reverb the original sound...
when you reverb something you might get some frequencies lasting longer then it should and if youre unlucky this is the freq's youre EQing...thus getting a veery long reverb :)
now I dunno if this is correct but the logic in my brain tells me it should be like this :) |

just experiment mate,,
it also depends very much on what type of sound do you want.. |

Lots of true points. I read you normally should compress the pure sound and then throw other fx on it, except when your doing some cool thing with it. like adding a tail with a reverb...
I heared that EQ should always be later than compression or reverb or so, cause these fx may create sounds at frequencies you don't want to hear. So keep it clear.
I agree with sebraa about the limiter tho... But a compressor also limits...... aargh :D
And of course we all should do what sounds best! That's the fun with music!! Just gathering tips. Thanks!
In fruity the order does matter. The sounds goes through the fx from top to bottom. (and then to the send i guess? if you turn the knob) |
