ok, i love trance and want to be a part of it now instead of just listen to it. i have a few basic questions tho.
if i get turntables i can only play what others have already made right?
if i want to make my own music want are some basic hardware things i would need?
is it best to learn how to DJ and then produce my own songs? or does that matter? thanks! |

1. right unless you make something and press it into vinyl
2. Start off with a computer and some decent speakers... Do NOT go ahead and start purchasing a whole bunch of hardware that you don't really know about them because you could end up wasting unecessary on something that sucks, something you don't need, or something you don't know how to use
3. Personally, there is two sides of the coin IMO... If you start DJing... you will start to really listen to the elements of the tracks and what makes a track good and whatnot and also how to make a track that is DJ friendly... It will help you in your producign later on but I do think it decreases your originality because you tend to follow the very same rules that makes the track good and tend to copy... On the other side of the coin, it is basically vice versa

Personally, I started producing before DJing but, IMO, as long as you understand the basic elements of trance and music theory, it probably doesn't matter which you do first. They both require different skills anyways. Try them both; see which you like most.
As far as production software is concerned, I recommend purchasing FL Studio as it is cheap, pretty powerful, and relatively easy to learn. It is also VST compatible, which means you can download and purchase new Software Synthesizers and effects, and incorporate them in to your mixes. Good Luck.

As for starting to dj or produce :
I started producing and now I still don't think like a dj in my productions meaning my songs are sometimes rather hard to mix.
(not ending with rhythm and not following the standard rules)
I don't know if that is a pro or a contra..
and (d'uh) a tt is for playing vinyls, which can of course be made by you if you practice long enough :)
Pretty much of the rest is discussed in the stickies on top of this forum |

In my case i started producing first, u have to really want to do it tho, their is no point spending money on all the equipment if u dont have a passion for it, |

1. yes. you can only play the records other people made.
2. the cheapest solution is to get a computer with a rather decent soundcard (the least expensive option is creative audigy) and software sequencer and synths (or software studios like orion, reason or fruity loops). you try that, and when you try some things you will see if you want to do it at all or not. then you decide wether you'll go software or hardware.
3. i suggest starting to dj first, because you will learn the differences between good and bad tracks much faster, and you will know better what to do to make tracks good. |

theres also final scratch for the turntable, which crosses out the vinyl only limitation,, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, eh? :D |
