listening with one ear

I got into djing just recently and I've noticed something. I beatmatch with one ear in the headphones listening to one channel while the other ear listens to the speakers playing live.
After mixing a couple of songs though, the ear that's in the headphones all the time starts to feel as if it has been blasted with loud music. The thing is that I always make sure that the volume is at a really comfortable level and definitely not loud at all. In fact, it's a little below listening volume if I have both ears listening in the headphones. Does this happen to anyone else? I'm wondering if it's damaging my ears or if it's just a temporary effect from my ears being a little disoriented or something... |

be very careful.. you can damage your hearing very easily when DJing, especially at live venues. I wouldn't worry about the volume in your bedroom, since you can control that.
When I've done any loud shows out of my room, I've used earplugs that have weak attenutation, but still let me heear what's important.
Remember: Every time your ears ring, you've lost some amount of hearing. Every time your ears feel tingly inside, you've also lost some hearing.
YOU'VE ALL BEEN WARNED!!! |

| Well I guess I should mention that I -am- only a bedroom dj right now. And this feeling in that ear after a while comes up even if the volume is extremely low. If I was listening to music normally with both ears in the phones, even under the same volume, it would not feel that way. It only happens when i'm listening with one ear for a while. |

the clinical term for that is TTS = temporary threshold shift.... it's ok, and normal when DJing, just maybe turn down your monitors or use both cans more often. |

| the biggest thing you can change is the equalibrium. You need your right ear to hear as loud as your left... not matter which one has the headphone cup on it or not. Your ears will automatically adapt as long as the volume going into both is equal. I do agree w/ the idea of using earplugs in a big event, it is very important |

| well, you could switch ears so the feeling is spread out between them |
