We don't THINK he sucks we KNOW he sucks. I don't like anything to do with the guy. His mixing skills, his musical taste all suck. He's just an overhyped and overpaid DJ. And he doesn't have any redeeming factors. Every time he comes to Dallas he's failed to convince me otherwise.
None of ya'll lame "Oakie" supporters are going to change that. So shut up and move on! |
Exactly.
I agree with you completely. |

| Yeah.. all these "Oakie haters" really hate Oakenfold, but they usualy love Tiesto to death! funny thing is that Tiesto plays 90% of what Oakie plays, like Insigma,Jan Johnson,The Prophet,Olive,People Want to be Needed.. but hey it's fun saying "Oakie sux".... :o |

| dazzed.. I agree with most of what you said. There is certainly alot of crap out there. You can even tell going through shadow's site. (a record store in itself). It does make me sick. You gave the example of so many commercial dj's dropping sandstorm. I know, I've been there. (That's all I get up here in Ottawa) But how many of them are making $25000 a set? That said, if Oakenfold is playing at Creamfields, for example, there is a more sophisticated audience. True clubbers or "trance addicts". They want cutting edge and they are willing to pay for it. If he played Britney.. what would happen? He'd be laughed out of the venue. He'd be a flop and no one would be willing to pay such a high price to see him. I wasn't saying he is a good dj because he plays commercial music. He is a good dj because he plays what people want to hear. If he didn't people wouldn't pay $40 for a two hour show. Most clubbers in world class clubs want innovation and quality the reason most quality djs get so famous. |

Well, there's an inconsistency there, my friend...
You say that he plays "cutting-edge music," which actually contradicts your phrase "music [that] people want to hear."
I always thought "cutting-edge" was the exact opposite of "well-known" or "accepted" or "what people want to hear." For example not many people appreciate Digweed/Sasha, that's cutting-edge. Everyone immediately gets the Vengaboys, that's commercial. So does Oakenfold play cutting-edge music or commercial music?
Here's another thing about this... When Tranceport came out, all the connosseurs started saying how it was a "good but overly commercial compilation." "The track selection, though excellent, was obvious and commercial."
Tell me, how can Tranceport be commercial when its track selection is so underground? Is Gus Gus - Purple "commercial"?? Is "Ascension" commercial?? Maybe I'm not getting something about the word "commercial..." To me, Tranceport is more underground than commercial. Something like Tiesto's Magik, on the other hand, seems commercial to me. |

| No, there's no inconsistency. Many people want to hear cutting edge/underground. Sasha and digweed are prime examples. Actually next to oakenfold Sasha and Digweed are the two most popular European djs in the USA right now. Sasha did win 'best dj in the world' last year. And he holds his own nights in Ibiza. He is one of the most popular dj's in the world actually. Look at Radio one's dj list. Seb Fontain, Carl Cox, Danny Rampling... All huge djs. None are commercial. Some might have an arguement for Jules or Fergie but they still have enough new material to keep the hardcore audience happy. |

| that comment on tiesto playing half the oakey does is so true and int erms of finding new tracks oakey does his job. well. but you guys gotta realise were a very biased group of individuals and in the end it all comes down to one thing. personal preferance you have just as much right to say it sucks as someone does to say its the best. i dont think were trying to find the 'truth' of whether hes a good DJ or not more reinforce your already established OPINIONS :D |

well actually im not a big oakenfold fan but honeslty i would see him over many djs .... but yes he is WAY OVER RATED !!!!!....and what pisses me off i see many of tiestos recent sets he plays very similar tunes as Oakenfold now ....is he trying to mimic him in some way or what ..i think its pathetic...if u want to mimic a dj at all mimic the god him self Paul van dyk....thats why honeslty Tiesto 99 - 2000 was my top 3 dj ...but now he is going more in a oakenfold style in his sets and im not digging it to much!!!
but yeah i dont say oakenfold sucks ...i just think hes totally overrated but yet i would see him over many djs! and over payed hehehe!!! and NO Oakenfold isnt a Trance God!! |

not really. sure all the djs play the same big songs, cuz those are the big songs. but their tracks inbetween are entirely different. oakies 98/99 was similar to tiesto. but not now. |

Alright, i'm going to give a smarter reason, why I don't like Oakenfold.
If you can get your hands on sets he's done from 1994-1999, and compare to what he does nowadays, its like night and day. He dropped in Barber's Adagio for Strings three! years before William Orbit even touched it, consistantly was experimenting with movie samples, goa trance, regular house and so on. He was amazing, and unbelievably creative, without getting too far out there.
Then he releases 'Bullitt in the Gun', stops focusing on good mixing, diverse sets, uses the same set over and over again, focuses on the 'business side of things', spreading music around america (in a rock-and-roll method, a total Judas to the scene), doing soundtracks for cheesy movies, which bring new tracks, but not necessarily good tracks.
Its just sad when you hear what potential, how great a DJ CAN be, but he decides to make 'what sells'. The man has a massive mansion (outside London, I believe), sportscars, the works. And then, I see him spinning, and he walks away from the decks during multiple times in the two times I saw him live. He spins a friday night essential selection on BBC, does breaks, does it badly, and says that's what he's been 'doing all the time in America' (which is a complete lie).
Where's the love? What is he trying to do?
I've decided i'm never going to give him a penny of my money until (or if he ever) finds his way back... |
