Haha, exactly. And why does it matter if Jesus is bastardized by holywood? They're free to use their artistic licence on other figures, so why not on Jesus? (who may or may not have existed)

whats wrong with this? jesus is a bastard. Mary should have not been so promiscuous

Even though I totally disagree with the Pope and everything he stands for, I still find it offensive when someone tears up his picture (sinnead O connor) or something. There are certain titles you should respect because so many of your fellows do. That doesnt mean you have to believe in it, or support it. But perhaps a little propriety should be involved when dealing with such issues, yes?

Wasn't Jesus bastardized by God? The original dead-beat dad?

???

A lot of people respected Adolf Hitler.

Respect should be earned, not inherited through title. I think if a person inherits a title (King, President, Pope, etc...) any amount of respect for that title should be returned to zero until that person shows that he can uphold or raise the standard that his predisessors have set. If not, then em.

Not really, no. I don't care whether a lot of my fellows respect someone or something, if I feel that it isn't worthy of respect, then i don't see why I should be compelled to respect it. Many people respect the Pope, but I - like you, disagree with pretty much everything he stands for. Good on anyone willing to rip his picture up, he's completely out of touch with reality.

You dont respect Hitler? That guy did quite a bit. Admire him? Of course not, but what the war machine accomplished under his direction was amazing.

Dont respect the pope? That guy spent like 80 years in church! How miserable!

It basically just comes down to respecting peoples beliefs. Not necessarily respecting the object of their beliefs. Little jabs like "jesus is a bastard. Mary should have not been so promiscuous" add zero intelligence. To take an objective look at how a pot smoke Jesus might reflect on contemporary blah blah... would be much more constructive than going after 3000 year old beliefs and calling them stupid.
