backstock records - what are they?

I notice "backstock" vinyl records are sometimes quite inexpensive from the online record shops. What exactly is backstock? Can you find good tunes or are these mainly on more expensive records?

I generally prefer to buy CDs, but if I can get more variety or better tunes or fresher tunes I would get the vinyl and rip it, even though it's more work. I'm not playing out yet but building up my music collection, house & trance.

Im assuming backstock is the same thing as backorder. Meaning they have more orders for the record than records they have for sale. Thusly they raise the price in hopes that not so many people will order whilst they are backordered, or if they do they get twice the payment.

Couple of possibilities. One might be that they are records that the retailer has in stock that haven't sold, and are discounted in order to move them off the shelves. Better to make a reduced margin or break even than to just have something sit forever.

That said, the term backstock is usually used in the record industry for tracks that a record label has had in stock previously (i.e. still has SKUs for), and that may be available for shipment, but are not guaranteed in any quantity. For example I had a few Nebula backstocks come in for me a couple of weeks ago, all of them being approx 3 years old or so, that were either still kicking around or had been repressed.

Siang I didn't experience any price increase when I back-ordered at a number of record stores in Aus, Europe n USA.

Anyway Tvmann, backstock like you mentioned it may have 2 meanings to me. one is like Siang mentioned. The other could be your definition of old stock ? Maybe thats why you've been getting them so cheap...

OK. Well I got an email from someone at a record store and he said they are records that range from a month to a year old.

So if a person doesn't mind using music that is a little old, maybe they have some good tunes. Just not the latest?

The cheapest way to get these is by buying in bulk 10 or more records in a bargain mystery collection (they just randomly pick out a batch for you). But if you buy this way would you maybe receive a backstock record containing a big hit from a few months ago? That woud be OK with me, since the clubbers around here (small city) are out-of-touch with the latest music so anything that sounds good (even if a little old) will be OK.

I'm thinking that if backstock is simply the older unsold records (or CDs I guess), then they might not have the older big hits, because those would probably have sold out. You would probably be getting the less popular tunes or quirky tunes that did not become hits and therefore did not sell.

I guess I should just put in a small order and see what I get.

ah yes please ignore me, I read post wrong. Thought you said expensive when you said inexpensive.

ugh, buying a bunch of random records that you don't know doesn't seem like a very good idea to me. it's more than likely that they'd be all crap, or wouldn't fit your style

I once bought a mystery bargain pack, and regretted it. Its just old stock that they can’t sell because it’s old and not very popular a.k.a. crap songs.
