...what a weekend, and I want to share my experiences with my fellow trance addicts. In a nutshell, I played for my largest ever crowd last night, and it was amazing! :)

Basically a buddy and I have been given a shot at residence at a local afterhours club (we both play trance). We played there on last minute notice a couple of weeks ago, on a night that was quite dead, maybe 20-30 people or so. So when we were assigned our timeslots for this weekend, I was optimistically hoping for a slightly larger crowd, but generally thinking that it will take time for the regular audience to grow (it's a newer club locally).

Imagine my suprise when I walked in the door last night to find the place packed with people. Not to mention trial by fire, as it was my first night of what will hopefully be a regular timeslot. Had a guy spinning house right before me, got him to pitch things up a bit, then dropped in Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock to get things shaking. :)

Nothing quite like mixing a track on your headphones and realizing that you're hearing people screaming and generally going nuts for the music. :)

As a sidenote, one thing I was really trying to focus on was gauging the reactions of the crowd, as well as their overall energy level. It's sometimes a bit difficult to predict what their reactions will be to a track until you play it. The club manager asked me to play some anthemy stuff to get the energy up a bit, best reaction by far was for Delerium - Silence.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate that you guys (and gals) are rooting for me, I really do. :)

For the moment I'm just taking it week to week, I'm already set to play the same timeslot next weekend. They are going to be making a big promo push in the near future with flyering and such, and I believe that the flyer has already been finalized.

I keep thinking about programming, namely because I've seen many of the really experience DJs on this forum mentioning it repeatedly as being key. I've noticed that some DJs tend to go out and play what they want to hear, much of it planned in advance, which isn't always what the crowd likes. I won't be wandering away from trance, as that's specifically what they want us for, but the actual types of trance are fairly important. In my case, I definately detoured from what I had been planning to play, definately built a lot of the set on the fly in the interest of keeping the energy up.

For example, at one point I was thinking to myself "hmmmmm, anthems, hmmmm, what to play", and decided to put on Veracocha - Carte Blanche, even though it honestly didn't mix in too wonderfully. As well, a friend that was there that night commented that playing Delerium - Silence was good timing as a few people were starting to wander, though quite honestly I'm not sure I was thinking about that...

Any suggestions about this aspect of playing for a crowd?
