The Toronto "scene" and "clubber"

With all the new venues, renovations, and nights in the city this spring, with a look towards the summer season, what impact do you think it will have on the kind of scene this city has, a well as the image of the average Toronto punter?

My personal take on things is that we are seeing the true end of the raver influence in the club scene, the party kid attitude of ppl who can dance with a variety of style, and dress the part as well. Although still there, it is the minority these days.

The big push it seems is for the champagne drinking, elitists, that are there for the event, but not the music. Afterall, it is a business, and door charges in excess of $30 are looking @ becoming the norm.

It'll be intersting to see what clubs survive, and what the atmosphere and crowd will be like @ each. I'm afriad the bar crowd that used to reside @ Whiskey Saigon and Joker and Plastique are going to sweep through our scene in mad packs soon. :nervous:

How do you equate rising door prices with increasing outside involvement?

With the push for the "apparently" upscale partier, the push for the R&B, meatmarket mentality that the DOCKS seems to be going for with their hootchie mammas Dare to Bare crap.

It's more about the fact that's it's a big event where a bunch of ppl are getting trashed, than a bunch of people out to tear it up for a DJ they love.

(this forum really needs a 2cents icon)

The music is starting to reach more people. That's how I see it. Who cares who the people are, or what they are dressed like. If you're there for the music, then that's all you need. Who cares what the people around you are doing, or wearing, or drinking for that matter.

People enjoy these events for different reasons. Most of us are there for the music more then anything. There are those people that like to go out and be seen, but , who cares about them...it's the music that makes these events fun!!

I think that the "expansion" that the scene is going through can only help. New people get exposed to the best music the city has to offer. This leads to more local talent in terms of DJ’s, and tons of new ideas that will make Toronto a hot bed of creativity for the music.

I just like to enjoy parties in my own way. I'm with my friends enjoying the beats. If there is someone there that is enjoying themselves by sitting in a lounge sipping champagne, so be it. They're having fun, and that's all that matters.

To keep this scene positive and growing, everyone needs to just do their own thing. Have fun however you know how, and embrace the fact that more people are coming out to enjoy a positive atmosphere, with great people, and great music!!

I've always made it a point to enjoy myself and be pretty social and friendly @ whatever venue/event I've ever attended in my years in Toronto, as most of you here can attest to.

However, the quality of the ppl you party with always adds, or subtracts to the quality of the venue and experience. There have been countless posts and threads about snobby, sketchy, clueless, or shallow crowds affecting a night, so it's a valid issue/observation in my opinion

Aside from the crowd issue though, what clubs/nights do you think will survive come fall? Which do you think/hope will fail?

^^ nice speach, but i also wouldn't want a regular crowd starting fights at edm parties.

Drunks suck. There really should be a no testosterone sign @ edm parties.

I think that a crowd matters to an extent. I mean if people are there to make trouble and fight at a chilled out event, then that does suck, and I'd agree that the crowd would distract from the night.

I still think that the type of people that are there don't really matter. If you're truly at an event for the DJ and the music, then that's all you need to concern yourself with. Just try to take the rest in stride.

It's clear that the crowd is a variable that will either add to, or subtract from a great party. But it's a variable that can't be controlled. So just party in your own way, and try not to worry about the way that others are choosing to enjoy themselves.

I agree that when someone starts preventing you from enjoying your night, then there is a major problem. And in that respect, a crowd can take away from an otherwise great night.

Growth of this scene is good.. IMO

Toronto has always been a poser city. its not getting worse in a sense except for the fact that the choices are becoming less and less. The posers always had a place to go and the partiers had their places. But, nobody is replacing the old party places with new ones as the clubbing cycle evolves. Its just safer these days to go after posers who buy crappy drinks and listen to radio music. I blame the media....Nobody wants the city or media to go after them after all right?

Its all BS and if i ran this country id make the media more succeptable for lawsuits over sensationalism.

Cataclysmic
I really don't understand why everyone is so concerned about "posers" at parties. Don't hang out with them, don't concern yourself with them... It's pretty easy to make your way to the front of the stage, where the true partiers are, and stay there. This thread started off saying that parties are starting to attract pretentious people that sip on Champagne. Who's being pretentious though, if we're sitting here and debating whether or not "our" scene is starting to attract "posers"?

Partying is about having fun, and listening to good beats. I think there should be a little less emphasis on who is comming to the club to enjoy the music that we're there for.

Posers bother me because when a club is over run by them it affects the vibe. It also starts affecting the style of music that gets played. When people stand around looking pretty and give you the hairy eyeball as soon as you break out into a dance move (on the odd chance they are playing something good) its not a fun place to be.

Yes right now there are still fun places in Toronto. But, they are definately becoming less and less. The trend today is to open poser bars with crappy music that attract people standing around in their von dutch crap thinking they are hot .

I personally go to a club for the music #1, but if people are NOT sociable (a big problem in toronto's clubscene btw) its not a fun place to be at. Clubs after all were supposed to be for social interaction and music.
