Out of bass sounds

Hi,
There's been a couple of discussion about basslines in this forum lately, but this question does not cover those areas. Instead, I'm having problems in finding a decent bass sound for my (mainly) melodic trance tunes. So far I've been trying to use the freeware PPD Tritium softsynth, but I'm not 100% happy with its sound, although it still is a good synth taking in mind that is completely free. The other choice for me has been to use my hardware Yamaha CS1x for bass sounds, but that hasn't really turned out well either, as its bass sounds more or less seems to be made for 1995 dance music (I'm not categorizing ;)).
I now ask you for new ideas and thoughts. I'm not really looking for sub sounding deep basses, but instead for more "clear" ones, which will work in rolling basslines, foremost. Are there any alternative freeware softsynths that I've missed out, and if not, what payware softsynths are you using for your trancey basslines? If you have a decent bassy sound that you use and would like to recommend, then if you have the possibility to upload a short mp3-clip of it "at work" would surely be more than appreciated by the rest of the folks using this forum, I assume. But I know most of us don't have the possibilites for that. I might need to invest in some new software.
Buying new hardware will not come into question, btw. :) |

Trittium is really a one-trick program, designed as a tb clone, and not a very good one at that. It does have a unique character to it and I do use it now and then but for trance basslines, I'm sure there are better out there.
Personally, for that sound you talk about, I have made a patch in Atmosphere that I tend to use although I rarely make rolling basslines in my music.
I think Triangle by RGC is free, you might want to give that a look. Otherwise, many people here like the sound of V-Station, by novation for their basses. Its not free but I'm sure there is a demo available and if you like it, then you can always upgrade to the full version. |

I don't even know if this will come in handy but sometimes different ways you layer your basslines helps and I will give two good techniques I use to give a rolling bass sound.
Allright pretend that the space below is 4 beats worth of space with 4 spots to put stuff in each beat a gallop can be achived by doing this with x's being the bass and O's being spaces
xoxx|xoxx|xoxx|xoxx
another technique I use is where you put one bassline at a higher octave and one below it so it drops up and down.Lets say that x's are c5 and O's are c6 and t's are empty.

I know you were asking for soundclips and I have a few you would probably be interested in but im going out of town for a bit but if you are still interested in 2 weeks I can send ya a wav pack you might like.I hope my patterns might inspire you (as off topic as they really are lol) |

Thank you both for your replies.
hey cheggy:
Good lord I had forgotten about Triangle. Yes, it is indeed free, and I have downloaded it some weeks ago, but I really forgot to install it. Got to try that one instantly. Atmosphere on the other hand is out of the reach, as it doesn't fit into my budget. :)
dj prometheus:
Yes, I'm interested in taking a look at your waves. If you could reply to this thread when you come back it would be great, then I'd know when to contact you further. Thanks. |

I guess I will make a basslines pack for ya and its lookin like I might have a bit of time today. If you get this before too late e-mail me at [email protected] and I will give you the trance bass pack I have. Some of the basses are more hardtrancey but if you do any kind of trance there are some meat and potatoes basslines in there too.If anyone else wants this pack have at least one mb availible in your mailbox and anyone can have it all you need is to mail me and ask.All samples are in wav format and they are compressed into one file with winzip.
P.s if anyone edits these with cooledit and invents something they feel is better let me know as I might want a copy of the edited sample.

try downloading synth1 or ilblit (both freeware vst synths).
there is a ton of patches for synth1 on patcharena.com and kvr-vst.com, and you might find it satisfying for leads and pads too. |

Superwave Trance-Pro is pretty good in my opinion.
you should check it out.
(eats cpu though, recommended is 2,4 ghz i think, which is exactly what i have, heh) |

| I've had Synth2 installed, but didn't really like the sounds it produced. Is Synth1 a completely different synth? |

| Synth1 tested. It didn't really produce the sounds that I'd like to have, but I found another freeware softsynth named TAU. With some EQ and compression maybe it will work for me in my current tune. I think it is possible to do more acid sounding tb303:ish sounds as well if you turn up the cutoff and resonance and perhaps add some external distortion as well. |
