MIDI and networks

This is a tricky one, and I doubt that it is possible. But who knows...
So, I wonder if it is possible to have MIDI work as part of a network. I have my hardware connected to a computer in one of the bedrooms, and I also have the sequencer program there. Then I have this second computer in another room. I can connect these two computers with a normal home network cable and e.g. transfer files from one PC to the other. But now I wonder if something like this would be possible (before I go ahead and dig out the network cable etc.):
-I open up the sequencer via the network (the files are on the other computer, but I'm sitting on this computer)
-Remember that the hardware is connected to that other (remote) PC. Would it be possible to have it all play on this computer, and then e.g. export to a wave file on this computer (non-realtime)?
I wonder if this was the right forum. If not, could someone please point me to the right one and I'll transfer this thread over there.
Thanks. |

the sequencer would be based on the other computer, but would run locally on your PC so I dont think it would. Besides, wouldnt you encounter a whole host of errors with the sequencer not being installed on your local PC? Stuff like VSTis would look in the physical path C:\My Vstis\ rather than the relative one your think of eg \\my other pc\c$\my vstis
its all getting far too technical and my head has just been through 7.5 hours of technical mumbo jumbo, so in summary, no i dont think it would - but hey, that never stops me trying something. |

Somekind of remote admin program, like this could be what you're looking for.
quote: | You see the remote computer's screen on your monitor either in a window or full screen. All your mouse movements and keypresses are transferred directly to the remote computer. You work on the remote computer just as if you were right there at it. According to our tests and user feedback, Radmin outperforms every other remote control software in speed and amount of work that can be done.

I actually physically moved my hardware from one computer room to the other now, so I will leave that network idea. It was easier that way. :) Thanks for the input though. |
