(and i have been a trance fan for about a year now, and i still dont know WTF progressive is. People told me listen to GU13, so i went out and bought it. I still dont know the difference. So if u want to explain it thanks) |

drunk w/redbull :) or anything that makes you a bit "off" with energy
The structure of "trance" and "progressive" are about the only differences. Trance is normally a bit faster then prog. The structure of beats and breakdowns are a bit different also. Another thing imo, most prog tracks seem to "progress" and get harder after the last break, where in trance a lot of the time the middle of the track is the climax, then drops off.
GU13 isnt 100% "progressive" imo a bunch of the tracks are progressive trance, as with most of sashas/digweeds album. Sasha's new remix album involver looks like its all progressive, i dont know much of the tracks though. |

It's confusing. I know I'll never get it. The labels are a loose, easy-access way to identify stuff but when it comes down to it, you hear the music for what it is through your ears as a unique human being. I like stuff that really mixes it up and crosses borders -- you end up with some really "Huh... Wow!" stuff that way.
I think too many trance tracks are in harmonic minor though with the same riffs (or variations on the same theme) used by many artists. I don't have a problem with this initially, but it gets to me when I'm trying to sort all these individual artists out and discover they are in fact, many artists sounding like one big one. They might as well all team up and work on a track :)
"Progressive" is more of an attitude, it encapsulates a wide net as is featured on progressive-sounds.com. I don't want to call anyone's tastes down, but there's a "fake prog" which is like really repetitive, monotonous stuff (which I just personally don't like), also known as "Honk Prog" to those like James Holden and Luke Chable -- the two of them, by the way, are leading lights of the progressive I do enjoy.
Often, it can be said they keep the music moving forward by throwing in new sorts of unconventional elements you might not expect to hear on the dancefloor. Then again, that is vague and subjective, but there are definitely records that you listen to and go... "aha, here's something... different!" Like, the familiar 4 on the floor beat, but a different sort of lead sound (maybe a harpsichord ;) ), treated and echo'ed like a more familiar saw wave or something. And production techniques like glitch editing and creative effecting are explored (Holden's "Break In The Clouds" is a hallmark of this). . . And it often grows on you. The more you listen, the more you like. In theory, anyway :D |

| yea, a lot of prog to me is boring though, unless it has a strong kick/bassline. Chable/MS are trapped between melodic trance and weak progressive basslines, and i dont really like that to much. |

the way i always thought of it is that prog is minimalist and trance is not. prog is more bare bones then trance.
not sure if that made any sense...but it does to me :) |

if anything, i would say the opposite.
The beat(the most essential component of dance music)of progressive
is much more complex than the beat of trance.
EDM's complexity to me lies in the beat, not some synth melody,
but to each his own. :)
oh and to the subject of the thread- if i'm drunk, i have a good time, but there is a big plus to being sober. For example, I
basically heard sasha spin airdrawndagger live, but I was so
ed up that I only remember half of the night- still had a wicked
time though :toocool: |
