| quote: | Calif. to Ban Teens From Tanning Booths

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A state famous for tanned bodies and year-round sunshine would be the nation's first to ban teenagers from artificial tanning booths if a bill passed Thursday by the state Assembly becomes law.
Lawmakers, citing a rise in skin cancer cases in California and across the nation, voted 42-26 to add artificial tanning to teenage no no's that already include smoking, drinking and buying lottery tickets.
Teens often visit tanning salons before proms, vacations and weddings, say owners of an industry that claims 160,000 employees nationally and $5 billion in annual revenue. California is estimated to have 1,500 tanning salons.
Backers of the bill, including the California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, blame tanning salons for part of 1 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year in the United States. The group cited 7,400 deaths annually from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
"There is a big difference between going to the beach and a tanning salon," said the bill's author, Assemblyman Joe Nation, a Democrat. "When kids go to the beach they put on sun screen."
The bill passed despite opposition from tanning salons and Republican lawmakers opposed to "meddling" in personal choices.
"If this bill passes it proves there's no part of somebody's life this Legislature won't stick its nose into," said GOP Assemblyman Ray Haynes.
Heidi Blank, manager of San Diego's Hollywood Tans, said she thought the bill could "hurt my business somewhat. But what are you going to do? There's people bigger than me making those decisions."
She said teenagers account for about 5 percent of her store's clients.
The bill, which now goes to the Senate for consideration, requires teenagers to have a doctor or surgeon's prescription before being allowed to tan indoors.
Along with 26 other states, California already requires permission from parents or a legal guardian for teens 15-18 to use artificial tanning salons. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Yeeeaaahhh... okay, for those of you who spend very little time outside, and/or have never seen or been seen by a member of the opposite sex without any clothes on, let me explain this in simple terms:
The purpose of a tanning bed is to get an EVEN TAN. You know, like the same colour everywhere? A lot of people think that tan lines don't look great and that having a brown face and white chest looks downright silly. If you disagree, that's your call, but it's a style thing and some people are just more picky. And unless you're a nudist, no matter how much effort you put into "sun-tanning", you're going to miss at least a *few* spots. So for everyone saying "JUST GO OUTSIDE!" That's great, but it only tans the skin which you have exposed, and in the middle of winter it's going to fade no matter how much time you spend outside.
Yeah, it's true, tanning too much is dangerous, and people who overdo it often have sickeningly ugly skin, but this is really no different from doing it in direct sunlight, aside from the fact that it works a lot faster and doesn't require you to put on greasy lotion. As Jeff so aptly put it, moderation is the key. If you go for just a couple of 10-minute sessions, you're not going to get skin cancer.
Please stop and think for half a second before you criticize - the government wants to institute this policy because "kids" often can't be depended on to do it responsibly, much like those "kids" are morons when it comes to alcohol or cigarettes. They're not doing it because they think that tanning beds are evil and dangerous and stupid. Frankly, I think that the proposed policy is idiotic, because I see just as many if not more people in their mid-20s who look like their skin is about to fall off. But hey, that's just one man's opinion - if you want to bash everyone who uses a tanning bed then go right ahead, but keep in mind that the group you're bashing involves a lot of hot babes who probably wouldn't be interested in a bunch of whiners. |
