Anyone got any suggestions on where to buy Decks + vinyl in brisbane?
Matt Jay
Central Station on Elizabeth street CBD would be the best bet. Although they are expensive. Lightsounds in Cooparoo and Lutwyche have technics decks for $850 but last time I checked they didn't have any in stock :(

Central Station
Rocking Horse (Adelaide St, just off corner of Albert St.. vinyl upstairs)
Butter Beats (just down from Rise on Ann St)
Ignition (new store, cross Ann St at Butter Beats and walk down 100m)
Phat Stuff (top of Wickham across the road and before Chinatown.. pretty sure they only sell breaks/battle records though)

And I forget the name of the store, but it's on the middle floor of Indro shopping centre, they sell some dance vinyl amongst the typical retail CDs and DVDs.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks heaps guys.

I'm looking to get 1210's. Any idea how much they go for in AU?

Should order them tomorrow.

1210s retail brand new for anywhere between $750 and $1000. Most places will discount them if you're buying a mixer and headphones off them as well. Remember to drive a hard bargain :D

I had a look at that place but I could only see pop/bogan rock :(

(although I didn't look very hard)

Viv? Yeah she's cool, I walked in there a week ago and she asked "what style do you play?"... I replied with trance, and she pulls out like two dozen records for me to listen to :D

It was good to know that I could listen to records in a store without feeling rushed... and without using busted and taped-up headphones like most other stores have :p

webmeister: 1200s for $750? I'd love to know where! :) Best I've found for new decks is $850.

Matt Jay: Yeah there's all styles there, but the dance should be on the far left... been a couple of months since I was there though, maybe they decided to take it out.

I'm fairly sure that's what I paid for mine about a year ago, from Light Sounds in Sydney...

The difference is that I was buying a mixer and headphones as well...

Ahh, I see... hmm, got myself a Numark DXM-01 recently so I'll probably just have to save the extra hundred.

I think i might be able to help you!

I have been checking out Technics 1200s all evening on the net, looking for some myself (when i have the cash in the future), and i found some interesting stuff.

It found that it can actually be cheaper to buy decks from the US and then pay for the shipping out here. The shipping ends up being about US$250! for two turntables, but this is offset by the cheaper prices that you get.

After extensive research, here are my findings:

  • 1200s and 1210s are pretty much identical, except for the colour, and supposedly (from what i have read) the 1210s have more problems for some reason, so the 1200s sound better :p
  • Cartridges usually (or sometimes?) don't come with the decks, so you have to pay extra for them. I have seen the good stanton ones for about $100

That's pretty much the best out of all the Aussie sites that i looked at.

Also check out http://www.onestopdeejay.com.au/ - i hear they do good deals. Don't have any prices for you though.
Vigilante
I visited several US sites for technics, and found some pretty good prices. However, the shipping prices to Australia are absolutely ridiculous!!!!!

Here are the shipping charges from UPS (which all the sites use for overseas delivery):

Australia / New Zealand

weight(lb) cost (US$)
1 24
2 27
3 29
4 31
5 34
6 37
7 40
8 44
9 47
10 50
32 121

Now two Technics weighs about 70 lbs (~30kg), so the shipping ends up being about US$250 assuming it gets cheaper w/ more weight.

OK I have taken into account an exchange rate of AU$0.7066 per US$1 and included a 4% "Cash rate" (charged by banks) for the following prices....they may be a little different in the end.

Technics SL-1210MK5 (black) -

Technics SL-1210MK5G (black)-
US$590 each, US$1180 for two = AU$964 each, AU$1943 for two

www.123dj.com

-----> These decks do not come loaded with a cartridge
-----> This site claims they will beat anybody's price (in US?)

Technics SL-1200MK2 (silver) -
US$400 each, US$800 for two = AU$706 each, AU$1427 for two
Technics SL-1210MK2 (black) -
US$450 each, US$800 for two = AU$744 each, AU$1427 for two
Technics SL-1200MK5 (silver) -
US$450 each, US$900 for two = AU$744 each, AU$1562 for two
Technics SL-1210MK5 (black) -
US$460 each, US$920 for two = AU$788 each, AU$1590 for two
Technics SL-1210MK5G (black) -
US$570 each, US$1140 for two = AU$937 each, AU$1889 for two

Well that's what i found. Now i want to know what you guys think of it....does it sound like a good deal to get them from the US??????????

*EDIT* By the way, all the prices that i listed in Aussie dollars included my calculation for the shipping charge.
