Here is what I think of 'Just Be' [my Amazon review]:

Tiesto has definatly employed a minimalist approach to his productions in this album. Like the music of the early 20th century, in the time of expressionism, atonalism and aleotoric music. On the surface, Tiesto furnishes a new sound.
The opening track "Forever Today" is the young brother to "Magik Journey". The interplay with instrumentation, but overlooks the melody and as a result fails to live up to its predecessor, as far as euphoria goes.

The second track, "Love Comes Again" further foreshadows the content of the album. Tiesto focuses on instrumentation and the sound itself, instead of the actual melody, which is ultimatly a mere two notes. The song starts with an addictive phat-synth-frenzy and by the end your in atonal heaven. But somehow you forget that and the music is inotxicating nevertheless. ITs akin to Scriabin's mystisism. BTs vocals enter nicely, but sound a bit cheesy as he goes on. Overall, the song will be a definite dancefloor hit, the shorter version that is.

Traffic continues the motif of the album - minimalsim. Definatly has an indutrial feel and the leading 2 note theme may scare some fans of melodic-Tiesto away. The prominent bassline will have the dancefloor moving and the riff will instill a new kind of feeling into listeners. A new kind of imagery is achieved, different from the usual of melodic trance.

Underneath all of this minimalist-atonal experimentation, Tiesto ultimatly explores the question of what is art? What is music? He asks whether art can be ugly, whether music can be atonal and still beautiful? Schoenberg lead the revolution in classical/romantic music. Tiesto leads the revolution in EDM.

To me, the most memorable track is "A Tear In the Open". The shear simplicity and yet the ingenuity of the track is staggering. It begins with a cliche-trance vocal sample, developing a melodic ambience. Then slowly and subtly a synth-string flows in. It is no longer just a pad that increases in volume. Instead it seems to be alive, with a mind of its own. It builds so slowly and so intelligently toward the climax. At first the synth develops into beautiful chords, then dwelves into melodic euphoria. But the albums motif is still there. The melody is comparatively simple, yet the interplay with the sound allows it to billow into ecstasy. The sfx remind of indutrial sounds of a train which add to the very melancholy mood of the song. However the mood is far more powerful and unique then was every achieved before in EDM.

Many trance fans are quiete fond of Tiesto's interpretation of "Adaigio for Strings". The track finishes the album with a famous melodic theme. But why would Tiesto include this track which seems to contradict the very essence of the album? I think the message could be viewed through many perspectives. Perhaps Tiesto was simply remining the listener of his roots. Maybe the distorted synth sound do continue to motif of the album, with the focus upon instrumentation. Or is it the nostalgic aura of the track that coupled with the rest of the album is Tiesto's social commentary?

The album cover shows Tiesto tuning in closely into sound, which agrees with my perspective on this album as an exploration of sound. The colors are inhuman and plutonic, mysterious unlike "In My Memory". And it is the ambience of the album.

Do not expect a "Subruban Train" or "In My Memory". Instead remain open minded and you will most likely discover what I have discovered.

wtf was all that that i just read :)

forever today got 2 loopish, but was an alright start...

then adagio is really good...

DJ Alex E.
I think Reflections is much better.
first on all i was quite disappointed by 'just be'. i expected something less cheesy after the massive 'Nyana'.
second i liked reflections alot. though it was a bit cheesy too, I think that PVD had done a great job with his tracks on the CD.
I'm not a big fan of PVD,but IMO Reflections is one of the best things he had done so far.
Orko
i think both of them are substandard. Especially for PVD. He has come out with much better albums.

I say neither, save your money for Sasha - Involver

Sasha's album may not be all him, but that doesnt mean anything cause its gonna be a solid album(heard the promo:D )
