Backing Up Music??...CONCERNS!!...External Harddrive vs. CDRs

Forever i have been backing up all my music onto Data CDs (CDR)
But i am simply tired of having so many Back Up CDs (Data CDs) and was thinking of getting rid of all of them and placing "ALL" my music onto an external harddrive...
What i plan to do is take everything thats on the Data CDs (back ups) and placing them onto like a 200GB external harddrive USB....and when i am not using them, i will keep the disconnected 200GB external hardrive USB in a safe place...like my closet...
My "MAIN" concern with doing this is that for some reason i have a sense of security having my music backed up on Data CDs/CDRs...and am scared that backing everything up onto this external harddrive is not as safe...
So i am asking for advice...should i continue to use Data CDrs as backup and have a mess of CDRs that i do not like...or having an external harddrive that will hold them all...is it "SAFE" to do this...i mean when not in use the hardrive will be safetly put away and only used when i need something..then i will hook it up via USB..
Also i heard it is NOT good for the harddrive not to be used..and that storing it when not in use is not good..is that true??
So what does everyone think?..is it risky? |

wow T14 I thought you were dead bro :P where the f you been! :haha:
now in regards to cdr's ... just keep doing that. It's the best way; even if with time some of them might start peeling etc.
Having a hard drive isn't a bad idea either, I've never heard about how **NOT** using it for an extended period of time could be bad for it ... but I could simply lack that info/urban legend :conf:
btw CDr's don't take that much space if you have them on spindles. ;) |

If you have 1 hard drive, just put in another hard drive
If you have 2 hard drives, you can put in a 3rd hard drive, but i think you need one of those IDE cards or something.
Putting large amounts of music on many CDs is tedious and i think its easier just to dump it on a hard drive. I dont know why, but i trust internal HD's more than externals. |

sup bro..long time no see:gsmile: ....i havent been around due to a move..jobby job...girlfriend etc etc etc...
Reason i dont want CDRs is because i "HATE" clutter...and i figured having an external HD would make it easier to access and be neater...i guess it's the OCD in me..lol
I am also wondering...if i have an external HD..do i have to have an operating system on it?...i assuem i would..not a big deal..jus wondering.... |

| I just started backing up all my stuff on an external HD. Besides the protective casing and minimal space requirements, it's easy to transfer any amount of files to or from another computer. |
