My disappointment at American culture

Like many of you might have done, I flipped through the channels at 8 p.m. tonight, trying to find the Bush speech. NBC didn't broadcast it, ABC didn't broadcast it, and it turns out the speech was only on cable networks (CNN, for example). Channels ran their usual programming, like NBC with its two hour Fear Factor. Is this lack of interest in politics and the government going to reflect the number of voters this coming fall? It really makes me sick to see how people care more about reality TV than government, which affects their everyday lives. |

American Idol is more important than American politics at the moment.
Go figure, it's not time to vote for a while and this is America, so set your priorities straight for the short term and go for TV ratings!

Great, then run down and give us the bottom line in one paragraph or one minute or less. You can take more time if there's no change in the policy of killing bad guys and putting Iraqis in charge of their country on 30 June.

the speech was nothing special, like usual. The only mildly interesting bit was the 5 points which you can find on cnn.com. Otherwise you didn't miss anything. |

People that want to watch the president's speech have enough sense to look for it rather than being bombarded with it on 15 channels. I think at least one non cable channel should carry it though so that the general public has the option to see it. |

I watched it. NBC was airing it when I checked, but I caught it on Fox News b/c the picture was better. I watched CNN afterwards to hear the liberal perspective from Madeline Notsobright. My understanding is that major networks didn't air it because the White House didn't specifically ask them to pick it up. This was a mistake, IMO, as I thought the speech was surprisingly strong and there were probably substantially fewer people watching the speech than there otherwise would've been effectively muting its effectiveness. Anyway, I thought it was one of the better speeches he's given in a long time. He addressed a lot of concerns about Iraq and gave much more specific details about the plan to transition and how he hopes things will go. He only really fumbled one part of the speech when he stumbled over the pronunciation of Abu Ghraib, but whatever.
Couple of thoughts:
1) He said he plans to have the plan in place by the end of this year. While it may be a bit optimistic(yea, it probably is), I think it shows his commitment to finish the job whether he gets reelected or not. I thought that was cool.
2)He made much more specific comments to events going on in Iraq, things that have gone wrong, why the administration thinks they went wrong, what they learned from their mistakes, and how to be more effective by implementing new strategies going forward. He showed flexibility, he planned for major involvement by the U.N., he appealed to other nations to support a young country, etc. Positive language overall here.
3) Afterwards, when I was watching Albright, she criticized his plan saying he was not specific enough. I thought that he laid out pretty specific plans, at least specific enough for the average American viewer without overcomplicating things too much. I know things will be much more difficult than a good speech, but Bush acknowledged that on multiple occasions.
It's too bad not as many people saw the speech as could have, I think he definitely score some points back with it. I'm also sure that his opponents will find a way to maximize any negatives, but it may not get that much attention since it wasn't widely broadcast. Too bad. |

so long as people who were interested could watch it and it wasn't just on cable then that seems fine.
As for your comment on people not caring, at least you don't force those poeple to vote like we do. All this means is that politics focuses on those people who don't care, they tend to be won over with more shallow promises than those who take a deep interest. |
