Returned Soldier Shot Dead On LA Street

May 25 (AP) — A soldier recently back from Iraq was shot dead outside a nightclub by two suspects who fired up to 30 rounds at the man and his friend, who also died, police said Tuesday.

The victims were identified as Brian Keith Butler and Melvin Deonte Knowles, both 25, said Officer Ryan Powell.

The two were walking outside the club just before midnight Monday when the suspects approached and fired between 20 and 30 rounds, shattering windows and putting a hole in a nearby apartment building, said Detective Rudy Lemos.

Butler returned from Iraq in late March and was preparing to leave for another assignment, Lemos said.

The area where the shooting occurred is part of a local gang's turf, but police have not determined if the shooting was gang-related. Neither victim was affiliated with a gang, Lemos said.

No arrests had been made, police said.

Reminds me of a story about a woman who fled from Sarajevo while it was under siege and arrived in Zagreb. A few days later the serbs launched their only airstrike on Zagreb and I think she was the only casualty.

What does this have to do with politics? This is a local crime.. typical in LA

its just a coincidence they happened to serve in Iraq.

I think its the ironic nature of it that is interesting coming back from probably the most dangerous place and arriving home thinking you have security away from the front lines only to be killed by random acts of violence.

LA is a hole.

I'm not surprised.
