Between things like this, the "metric martyrs," and other similar stories, the EU is getting on some peoples' nerves. There was a poll published yesterday that the UK Independence Party will actually get more votes than the Lib Dem representatives when elections are held June 10.

EU bans giving bones to dog owners

Butchers are being threatened with fines if they give bones away to dog owners.
They are being sent letters telling them that a new European directive bans the traditional practice.
In future, Britain's 10,000 butchers will have to pay for the bones to be incinerated rather than hand them free to customers for their pets.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs today confirmed the Brussels ban.
It said the bones are now considered "waste" which must be properly disposed of.
A spokesman said: "Customers can take bones away with them when they buy the deboned meat if it is for human consumption.
"But if the bone is waste or for pet food then it's a byproduct - and cannot be passed to the public."
Aberystwyth butcher Aled Morgan, 35, one of the first to receive a warning letter, said: "I just don't see where the EU is coming from. It's just going to cost butchers at least £2,000 a year."
Local dog owner Martin Swanson, 32, said: "It seems to me to be another barmy EU directive."

THE actress Joan Collins yesterday declared her support for the UK Independence Party as it emerged that she had never before bothered to vote.
She was welcomed to the Eurosceptic party by Robert Kilroy-Silk, a new candidate, at a photocall in Nottingham where she is performing in a play.
She said she was flattered to have been asked to join the UKIP by Mr Kilroy-Silk and shared his views about the future of Britain.
The film star told a press conference: "I do feel that my country - I am English - is losing a lot of what I grew up with. I feel we are eroding ourselves to Brussels.
"I find it sad when I go to America and every single school proudly flies the Stars and Stripes, that we can’t do that or nobody seems to want to do that in this country. I was extremely flattered to be asked, when Robert Kilroy-Silk called me and asked me to be a patron of his party. I’m very happy that he is going to win it."
When asked about the politics of the UKIP, she replied: "I am not a political person."
Mr Kilroy-Silk told the packed media conference at the Hilton Hotel: "I have known Joan Collins for a long time and I have always known what her political views are. She is very straightforward, very fair and she believes what we believe in - that she wants Britain to govern itself.
"She is very proud of her country. There is no messing about with Joan Collins.
"She speaks her mind, and I have always admired her for one other thing.
"She has always worked hard, she has always kept herself well and she has always been a brilliant role model for other women.
"She has always been an independent woman who has looked after herself, and it is no surprise that, as an independent woman, she wants to live in a country that is also independent."
Collins was reluctant to talk about politics and quickly left the photocall to promote her play at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham.
Mr Kilroy-Silk said: "Joan Collins has very clear political views. She is in favour of being governed by her own people and she wants Britain to come out of Europe."
He admitted she had never bothered to vote before but said it showed how strong her views were that she was prepared to now. He added that her main contribution was to raise the profile of the party.
When asked about her comments in a national newspaper in which she said she had nothing to discuss with a citizen of Slovakia after talking about the weather, he said he understood her views.
He said: "She has more in common with someone from America than with someone from Slovenia.
"She does not want to live in a political union with Slovenia or Slovakia.
"What we don’t want to do is to be governed by the French and Germans - I don’t want to be governed by Chirac and Schröder.
"My father did not give his life in the war that we should be governed by Chirac and Schröder, by France and Germany.
"I don’t want my three lovely grandchildren to grow up in a country called Europe. I want them to grow up in a country called Britain." |

Ah these EU directives. Always used by the nay sayers to suggest that EU is some form of dictatorship. I remember the discussion in Sweden when we where about to vote for/against EU. There was this huuge discussion in the media and else where regarding some whack EU directive stating that a cucumber has to have a certain bend to be allowed to be labeled a cucumber! wtf! Something similar was afoot with the definitions of bananas. I don't know if these weird directives ever existed but I'd be damned if EU ever would consider actually enforcing them.
Sweden tend to wanna do everything by the book and if something is stated in some form of paragraph or directive then Sweden typically feels it has to obey it down to the last syllable. I remember how the rest of Europe where laughing because of the discussions in Sweden regarding the tiniest EU directives that no one else bothered to even read but Sweden was hell bent on following them. Or at least that was what was being discussed.
I bet EU has a loads of small weird and prolly useless directives since the legislators or whatever you might call them tend to follow the "if you say A you have to say B"-way. Which means they don't have a clue at what level the EU directives need to stop. So, we get this directives at the miniscule levels but it's usually up to the good judgement of the various countries if they are gonna get enforced. |

I wouldn't read too much into the angle British newspapers take (on anything!!) They make it out like the EU had as its main concern butchers giving dogs bones. Stupid people (ie the British public!) may think that but the actual reason was not even discussed by the article (reasons for waste disposal etc) The newpaper just wanted to portray the EU in a certain way by excluding certain details. Its a trick the British press do all the time (and to a greater extent to other countries I expect) Its like when you hear everyone going on about how "you cant fly the St George's flag anymore" (and there are a hell of a lot of people who say this) cos of little tid bits they've read in the papers. But anyone in this country can see its bull as every pub is crawling with Red and White crosses (and every car too!) but they will still say you cant fly them cos of offending Muslims or other nationalities!!!
So, before you take a certain view of the EU, please dont base it on anything you read in this country cos they are proffessional bullters out to portray the EU as summat that is trying to destroy our way of life! |
