i have a 1000 dollar limit on my capital one card with a 9% apr.First card ive ever had. Id imagine after my year of always making payments they would extend my credit line.

edit* i always pay fully and early. interest is for suckers.

I think most major cards (visa, discover, etc.) have those options. Just be careful not to rack up too much debt. A love for trance music (esp. vinyl) + credit card can cause you problems pretty easily, hehe.

Discover is a very good card if you DO NOT keep balances. The lowest APR I can get tham to go is around 9%, but Disocver typically has a high limit. Additionally, the cashback bonus awards are a very good thing.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

Credit cards are nice to have in order to pay for things quick and easy, not need cash, and categorize your expenses in to nice monthly reports...but you have to pay them off every month.

Carrying a balance is about the dumbest thing you can do when it comes to money. It adds up fast...it keeps CC companies not only in business, but rolling in dough.

Next to possibly your first car, the only thing you should ever have a loan for is a mortgage payment on a house.

Having credit card interest payments is digging your own grave.

Spending limits are usually based on your income, as well as credit rating (ability to pay your bills or at least make minimum payments so they make money off you). They usually start off like orbax says...about a grand, and will increase until you tell them to stop.

I say this because, you may just want a cap on what is possible, because you know you'll never put X dollars on the card in one month, and if it's stolen, ye ol theif can't go all out (even if you never pay for it).

At one point, my discover card company of mine wanted to increase my limit to more than I made in a whole year...they were shocked that I wanted to cut that by half..but they are obligated to set that limit which you desire....course now I qualify for those fancy American Express cards with no spending limits since I make the Big dollar...rather than those smaller size dollars found in parts of 12 counties of the tri-state. Alas...may ditch the Discover for and Amex with Miles...but then again I don't need miles, I fly for free....choices choices.

I will always pay my bill off every month. I will not pay for something a) I can't afford and b)have interest on it so it costs me more in the long run. The money saved by not paying interest will by 10 fold records in the long run.

I recommend the Discover to new ppl and you pay your balance...they give cards to college age peeps, and will get you higher limits. Cashback avg's about a penny on the dollar (not alot but better than 0)
Other options would be to get an Air Miles card, or some form of accumulation...(if you are getting 0 out of a card...you are not getting the best deal.

I'd look at American Express

I'm 20 now but have had an American Express card since I was 18 and it has been very useful. Since I travel a fair bit I have a British Airways Premium Plus credit card. One of the good things is since it is designed for frequent flyers who use the card to buy lots of $4000+ airline tickets they give you a decent credit limit to start. I was given $3000/month at 18yrs with no credit history and its now moved up to $15,000/month.

Try airline affiliated credit cards, since these are designed for travellers they give you a decent limit off the bat. Pretty much all the major airlines do one and there is the bonus that you get frequent flyer miles for every $ you spend.

The one thing about American Express is the interest rates are quite high so don't bother with it unless you can pay it off each month. Paying it off in full each month also means you get a good credit history and helps put your credit limit through the roof

The American Express chargecards do require an annual fee though include other benefits such as travel insurance so if you travel a lot then it may be worth considering this, I got myself an American Express Platinum chargecard for this reason alone but hardly spend anything on it

This is a useful page showing all the American Express cards on offer. There is a tool where it asks you a few questions about your spending behaviour and recommends a card

I also see a AmEx Blue for Students

Thanks,
Fraser
